Hello!

Ever since I fell pregnant I keep getting cold sores and I don’t know why. Usually mid way through my cycle I would get a very small one but in the last few weeks, no sooner do I get rid of one, another appears. Does anyone have any advice or has anyone experienced the same thing, it’s very embarrassing?

  • They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Many people carry the virus but do not regularly suffer from cold sores. However, during pregnancy it is quite common for women who have been unaffected for many years to start experiencing outbreaks of cold sores again.
The virus that causes cold sores — usually HSV-1 — can also cause genital herpes, which is more of a risk to your pregnancy and growing little one.
You cannot get rid of cold sores overnight. There is no cure for cold sores. However, to speed up the healing time of a cold sore, you can consult with your doctor and take prescription medications such as antiviral tablets and creams. A cold sore may go away without treatment within a week or two.

  • I got my first when i was pregnant could be immune system is f=down. Haven’t had one since!

  • Being under stress, run down and hormonal changes exasperate it so try rest and take it easy.

  • The virus is in your system and you can’t get rid of it the best ointment to use is Zorvirax. when you feel a cold sore coming on the first day you should apply the cream every hour and then you will notice it wont be as bad the next day and will heal quicker.

  • Pregnancy and hormonal changes in women caused by the menstrual cycle are common triggers that cause cold sores to return

  • use a patch, your immune system must be down due to your pregnancy

  • Stress can cause cold sores! Make sure you are taking a good pregnancy multi vitamin and apply your for sore cream as soon as possible! Also get plenty of rest.

  • old sores are more likely to come up when you are under stress or have a weakened immune system and pregnancy will definitely do both to your body! I also get cold sores and have noticed this is pretty much spot in general, but especially during pregnancy. Get the cream on as soon as you feel the tingle.

  • there are some good comments here

  • ive never had one before so im not to sure on how to help

  • Are you run down perhaps?

  • u poor thing there not much u can do about this

  • check with your pharmacist about the pregnancy vitamins you are on, (If not talk about suitable ones), and see if there is a better one for you. Check also the suitability of L-Lysine in pregnancy with your pharmacist – as when not pregnant I found this combatted the cold sore quickly.
Remember your body is being bleached with nutrients for the bub – so you need to stay on top of this.

Once the baby is born, be extremely mindful not to kiss the baby with any sores or tingling you may be experiencing. It is hard, but also make sure you sanitize every time you touch your mouth during an outbreak as this can transpose onto the baby.

I have been lucky – i suffered badly before both children were born, but pregnancy seems to have sorted this out for me and (touch wood), I have only had the odd outbreak in 7 years.

My children know i cannot kiss them if i have any signs what so ever, and I give them extra hugs and cuddles instead. They know that if mummy has one (now that it is rare – whoo hoo), that she is run down, and they will make me rest and bring out their teddies to make me feel better.

Just remember, everyone has the cold sore virus – but some of us are the unlucky ones to actually break out with it.
I can only hope that it is a pregnancy thing only for you and nothing after.

  • U must be very run down… That’s when they come

  • My daughter did during her pregnancy. I wouldn’t worry too much. Just speak with a chemist to find out what you should use.
