Hello!

My inlaws live 8 hours away from us and we’re trying to work out something different from the boys (aged 4.5yrs) for Christmas this year. We already have Christmas photos as well as Christmas cards, featuring the boys but we are after something different. Any Christmas Ideas for grandparents from the children?

  • Anything hand made is also loved by grandparents.

  • What about videoing the children playing and talking to camera with Christmas wishes for their grandparents and then sending it via DVD disc or USB (depending on whether they are tech savvy or not).

  • What a great question! I’m looking for ideas as well! The photos have been done so many times for us, would definitely love some new inspiration. Thanks!!!

  • A desk or wall calendar with photos of the kids from the past year – so photos from January 2014 will be on January 2015. Let’s the grandparents see how much they’ve changed in just a year

  • Great suggestions ladies, thanks for the various ideas! Keep them coming

  • We Make up a DVD of the kids talking and movies and photos of them through the year on a DVD and send they’ll love it

  • A calendar can be nice – you can use photos of the kids and/or photos of their best artworks for each month (eiother homemade or using a printing service). Another thing our kids have done is decorate handkerchiefs with fabric markers.

  • I love the idea of the digital photo frames as you are not limited to one photo. :-)

  • My parents are overseas and I sent my dad a key ring with a photo of my son in it and he used it for his car keys so that he saw my son every day it has lasted for years and never faded. I also mail memory sticks with video and photos of my kids to the grandparents as they’re not too tech savvy but can plug them into their laptop or the digital photo frames that we bought them for Christmas last year. They all love their updates and seeing how the kids have changed throughout the year. The great thing is that the memory stick is so small that its cheap to post but means a lot to the recipients.

  • My niece has a mug with a photo of her daughter on it. Years ago, my Mum was given given a piece of white fabric with a “print” of her 2 garanddaughters on it. It also a pre-printed heading on it. I can’t remember the exact saying. It was something like “Grandma’s little rascals” The fabric was stitched across the top and fixed that it could be hung on the wall. I think it was done at a stall in the corridor of a shopping mall but I don’t know where. What about an occasional Family photo??? Not necessarily every year but surely one would be appreciated sometimes. If you don’t want to use a photo maybe something small that you have helped the boys make. Maybe if your boys go to Kindy or pre-school maybe one of the staff there might have an idea. Do you ever talk to any of the other childrens’ parents. One of them might have a suggestion. One year my Mum was given a pine cone decorated with red coloured cellophane(you could possibly use coloured paper) cotton buds and it may have had green of something glued into it too. Her granddaughter made it either at Kindy or in reception at school (bit too hard to remember actually when – . she is over 30 now). I can’t think of anything else at the moment.

  • My much loved Xmas present last year was a photo frame with all my 4 grandkids individually displayed in it & I also got a book called Me & my Grandparents that the grandchild writes, draws & stores their favourite memories of you & them in this book. Very special to me!

  • Nowadays in the photo-shops you can find so many nice products, like mouse pads with the pictures of the kids on them. I’d also like the idea of a digital frame, where you can already upload pictures of your kids.
