Hello!

My son starts prep next year just wondering if anyone has advice on healthy lunch box ideas and how to keep his food cool for the day?

  • Wraps are brilliant and rice paper rolls.

  • I try to do every day something else in the kids lunchboxes. A bun with sunflower seed spread (instead of peanut butter), quinoa or sweet potato wraps (Woolworths), a pot with greek yoghurt, muesli and goji berries, veggie buns with boiled eggs, mini rice cakes with sweetcorn kernels and a strip of tasty cheese, I also make weekly sweet potato waffles and freeze partly in for the next time. I always add cherry tomato’s, cucumber, carrot strips, raw mushroom, pickles and or olives and beside that they all get a pot with roast broad beans, roasted and lightly salted coconut and a fruit in their lunchbox flakes, plus a fruit for crunch and sip.

  • Wraps are great, there’s so many different fillings, meat and salad, just salad, just meat, egg, tuna etc add some fruit yoghurt veggie sticks and dips. I got the lunchboxes that came with ice blocks. You fill and freeze the block and sit it in the lunchbox before they go to school

  • I recently made a quinoa salad with toasted walnuts, dried cranberries, coriander, spinach and roasted pumpkin – simply dress with caramelised balsamic each morning, and Bob’s your Uncle – a healthy, hearty lunch!

  • Frozen fruit box in the lunch box will keep everything cool. Mini chicken and salad wraps for lunch might be nice, but probably a bit messy with the younger kids. Cheese, carrots and salad items like cherry tomato… some pieces of fruit, strawberries etc. All yummy tummy fillers.

  • yoghurt. muesli bars. carrot sticks

  • I have a facebook page with some lunchbox ideas: Weetbix slice, Choc zucchini cakes, pumpkin and date cake, banana carrot cakes and more. I am Yibba Yabba Mama.

You can also try lots of raw veges, cut up fruit or whatever your child likes. Perhaps there is a fridge in the classroom to keep lunchbox cool! If not an ice brick in a cooler pack will do fine. Only pack water, no need for juice or other drinks. Good luck, enjoy being a school mum!

  • cooler bags which are also lunch boxes are everywhere one of them with a small freezer brick will keep food cool. we buy one with a separate sandwich compartment to keep the freezer brick away from the bed.
    yogurt pouches, cheese sticks/triangle/cubes/wheels (whatever)
if your including a poppa no fruit juice its actually just full of sugar and very unhealthy go with milk devondale has great extra calcium flavours and aldi brand has no artificial colours or preservatives or flavours.
natural puffed rice treats are great but can make you thirsty.
some musli or cereal bars can be healthy but a lot are not so research whats in them before you buy.
    healthy bikkies.
    whole fruits.
veggie sticks with a hummus dip or vegemite dip or something else healthy.
    hope this was helpful

  • Coconut chips for recess and a piece of fruit.
