Hello!

I’m a FTM and I’m finding the introduction of solids to my little one very daunting. I know I need to start with puréed foods. I wondering what to start with? Do I introduce multiple foods at a time or once a week?

  • I started with apple and carrot and sweet potato….and then adding more and more

  • I was very uneasy as I’m so paranoid about choking. I started off with rice cereal, then slowly progressed the pureed vegetables then fruits. It gets easier x

  • This was a huge thing for me as I have a massive fear of choking. I started my son on rice cereal then moved into pureed vegetables or fruits. Then moved on to the larger hand held foods. It’s all very daunting in the begining but gets easier as you go x

  • The first thing a tried was some farex with their milk. If that’s still a thing….

  • Do what you feel is best and what you feel comfortable with. We have two children and baby led weaning became so popular with our first. All of our close friends resorted to baby led weaning and we just were never comfortable with it, and still weren’t with our second. We started with simple pureed foods like single fruits and veg just to get them used to textures. We stuck to the same food for 2 or 3 days just to ensure there were no allergies. Our almost 3 year old loves food and our 11 month old does too. Both have healthy relationships with food.

  • I am also trying this out for the first time and the advice I’ve been given is to start with bland veggies and fruits before moving to those with more flavours

  • Vegetables are great. We stared with pumpkin. It makes for a beautiful coloured mess !

  • I think I did vegetables first before fruits as the fruits were sweeter.

  • Start with the basics like banana, carrots and apple. See what your bub seems to like and you can go from there.

  • It’s generally wise to introduce foods with a few days between each, so that if your child has a reaction, it’s immediately obvious what caused it. I did a new one every three days, therefore. Start with something a bit bland (rice cereal is great, so is porridge) and move on to veggies and a few fruits.

  • Don’t overthink it. Just puree whatever you find easier like banana, avocado, lentils and rice, sweet potato. Just offer small quantities and if refused the first time, then make sure to keep giving the refused food item after a few days for the palate to get used to the taste. This will ensure you raise a fuss free child who likes food. Sometimes adding a bit of breast milk enhances the nutritive value and flavour.

  • We started with soft egg yolk.

  • Do you have a Maternal Health Nurse that you visit regularly who can give you advice and help you through this?

  • We waited until our little ones showed and interest in foods themselves (trying to grab stuff off our plate etc). There are some foods you can give that they can just “try” in their mouth without swallowing necessarily and then started some puree apple, pumpkin, pear etc. And slowly made them less puree and a little more lumpy and solid.

  • Start simple. First foods I used were the Heinz jars as there’s often a lot of wastage when you first start as babies can’t eat much in the beginning (appetite will grow as bubs gets used to it) and cerealiac or similar rice cereal is great for breaky.
