Hello!

Lately I have been wondering a bit about pet insurance for our family pet cat. I am wondering if any other families out there have pet insurance and if it is worth it. If so, where would be the best to look for great deals on pet insurance? Thanks

  • I find its not worth it – but definetly shop around if you do and check what they cover

  • I haven’t bothered – when I bought my boys a kitten each I had a look. There was an excess of $150 at it cost more than my car insurance. I decided I would have to brutal if they needed expensive treatment and see what it was at the time and if it would be worth it. I think many vets will allow a payment plan.

  • don’t think id bothered for a cat, but that’s my opinion. I had if for a little while with my dog but its costs heaps and then theres the excess

  • Honestly, pet insurance is nothing but trouble. They will try to dig through all records to avoid paying out a claim. Personally if I got a new pet, I’d put the ‘premium’ money aside and use for emergencies.

  • When the direct debit for pet insurance comes out of my account, and its $1.50 MORE than the cost of my private health insurance (extras) I also begin to wonder…. Im going to re-assess the situation and have a think. Got ours through Medibank, its reasonable but yes, will be having a re-think and another shop around. I do know people that have had vet bills up to $8000 so yeah, I would think its worth it in that instance…. Problem is that if you have it, and cancel it something will probably happen! Double edged sword.

  • I remember talking about this not such a long time ago. Maybe you could check this discussion: https://mouthsofmums.com.au/mom-answer/does-anyone-have-pet-insurance/

  • Saved for vet bills instead as the insurance was costly and would not cover pre existing conditions.

  • When we add a dog to a family this is something i will look into doing as it can save you thousands if your dog get sick, hit by a car etc. With the dogs i had growing up there were times it cost my parents thousands for operations etc. But before signing up i would want to read the fine print to see what they actually do cover. Its peace of mind knowing you dont have to worry about where the moneys comming from.
