Hello!

I don’t wish to lighten or bleach first, my hair doesn’t handle lightening well at all. I don’t have the time to let the hairdressers work there magic. Any brand or product suggestions? Thanks everyone

  • If you have dark hair without lightening it first you will struggle to find a colour that will be vibrant on your hair. You could always get pre coloured extensions and apply them to your own hair for some colour.

  • If you are going to use different dye it may be a good idea to try a skin patch test first, especially if it could contain different chemicals or be a different brand.

  • You would need a really dark purple and probably need more then one application and it still might not show up very well

  • Its best to bleach first to get the desired colour, maybe look at a temporary colour first

  • Yes. My teenage daughter dyed hers Pink from dark.

  • Maybe have a chat to someone at one of the bigger hair product outlets – they may be able to assist you too? Good Luck!

  • I have Dark brown almost Black hair.

  • Just go for the temporary hair dyes or hair colour mousses and dare to experiment. Many hairdressers sell temporary mousses in different colours, which stay in for a couple of weeks and are quite harmless. Bleaching your hair has rather a destructive effect on your hair indeed.

  • Not sure of exactly the depth of colour that your brunette hair is, but a dark, vibrant purple that is a semi may impart some pigment, but like someone else said I’m not sure it will last long. I tried a rinse on someone that was supposed to be a vibrant blue, but really only darkened their medium/light brown hair slightly and you could only see a hint in the sun. It did dye the scalp blue, but that’s about it. There are some salons that claim to be able to lighten without using the traditional methods. If I could remember which one in my area did it I would look it up so I could at least tell you what technique they claim works. If it comes to me I will post it up here for you.

  • Bleaching hair to dye it purple is necessary if you have very dark hair, and you want to dye your hair pastel purple.
If your hair is not black, and/or you want to dye your hair dark purple, you can colour hair purple without bleach by using temporary hair dyes. Depending on your natural colour, you might be able to achieve very fun and vibrant hair colours with these kind of dyes. The drawback is that they literally last one wash. You can have fun and try them without the fear of permanently dyeing your hair though. Although bleaching hair is recommended to get the exact colour shown on the box of temporary hair dyes, you will be able to achieve pretty vibrant colours and dye your hair purple without bleach on any base colour apart from black. For something half way, you can try the many semi-permanent colours options available on the market. They dye your hair purple without bleach, will last up to 1 month, and give you an intense purple colour, although not as vibrant as the temporary hair dyes.

  • I’ve used a blacky/purple dye before and it worked decently enough in my brunette hair. Bleaching my hair ruins it for many years to come. Blue/black looks nice too with darker hair.

  • I was at the hairdressing salon and someone had their hair colour changed and they had to bleach it first for the colour to take and set. I do not know if there is a way around it – I do not dye hair. Maybe check some online pages via social networks – someone may have this experience and be able to share their tips?
