Hello!

He has been in the 4 year old kinder room this year, and has a number of kids in his class who were also born in March. The other parents are all sending their children to school. My child is one of the ‘leaders’ – he is the class clown, has lots of friends and plays well socially, has no separation issues, copes well with a normal length day, doesn’t have naps anymore, sits and concentrates mainly when interested in topic or he’s tired. Do you think he sounds ready, how will I know?

  • Wow he sounds like he is more than ready . I think you can actually assess your child at the school chosen . Maybe bring this up with the school co-ordinator / assistant and see what they think . My brother started Kindy too early and had to repeat , and it was good for him then .

  • He sounds pretty ready to me. But you won’t really be able to answer that until he actually starts. From what you’ve said, he should be fine

  • My son who was 4 in May is ready now and yet my other two (who were 4 in August and September – so a few months younger starting) didn’t seem ready until the year they started – a lot can change in a few months and they develop so quickly at this age.

  • I would speak to the teacher and see what they think!

  • Do a few tests with him, he may be maturity ready but not educationally ready. Can he tie his shoes, do up buttons, open his lunch, fill up his drink bottle, toilet himself, know how to write and recognise his first name, count to 20 and recite his ABC’s? General self help. These are all the things apparently my son at the time was meant to know on his first day of prep. Good luck

  • yes there is a lot to consider hey. I feel like my oldest child was ready for school at this point but my 2nd child, i feel like she could be happy at home for another year lol. I will send her and see how she goes. If it is too much, then we will wait

  • My now 20 year old son was in the same position. All his mates went to school and he stayed at preschool. I was worried, he was the top of the class and was definitely a leader, at first I thought it was a mistake but now he has finished school and is at Uni I look back and know we made the right choice. He did some HSC subjects in advance in year 11 which would have been his year 12 year had he gone to school early. His results that year were OK but not outstanding. In his year 12 subjects he got outstanding results giving him access to a uni course he had only dreamed of doing. He was a different kid in year 12, so much more mature and really ready to knuckle down and put in the hard yards.
In the end for him it worked out that his career choices would have been limited had he gone that year early. His isn’t the only case we came across as he went through school, so many of the younger ones didn’t do as well as they could have, but it only showed once they were in high school.

  • I would be keen to speak with his teachers to see what they think about his school readiness. By the sounds of things, he is ready for school next year. My Big One is 4 – he is a January baby – and his preschool teachers have been telling me from the second week of Term 1 that he is ready to start kindy next year. Good luck!

  • A question to think about is – will being an extra year older maturity wise in high school be a benefit? It’s not just about starting school, you need to think about the other end of school too.

  • If there ready go for it ,in SA the school only take in once a year so our lad has to wait ,5.7 yrs before he starts ,wish it wasn’t this way .

  • My nephew is in the same situation as your son also born in March and I believe my sister was given the same info as well.

  • Thanks guys,
It’s Victoria and the cut off is April 30.
His kindy teacher suggests that he is fine to start school but will be guided by what we want….

  • It really depends on which state you live in as too when your child starts school. Usually there is a date/age that your child will be scheduled to start school for example in SA & the kindy will give you all the info you need.

  • If he attends a kinder and he wasnt ready the teachers would have talked to you about repeating the year. But if its a daycare room i would ask to speak to the head of the room and tell her you would like her input as to if he is ready. i would follow the advise they give you. But to me it sounds like he is ready. I would take him to some of the school settling in sessions some schools are already running them for next year or soon will be.
