Hello!

Mums who like to buy handmade and have older girls…I would like to start a handmade clothing business, there just seems to be so many people doing it. I have noticed that there is s bit of a gap between little girls and ladies where people are not making and selling clothes. So what I am wondering is do you think there is a market for handmade girls clothing (fashionable of course) between approximately 12 and 16 years of age?

  • I think you could market to children with particular needs. There may be children who are short or tall for their age, or are not in a particular weight range. There’s possibly also a market for formal wear for this age group. I would start a facebook page with some designs and see if there is any interest.

  • I agree with the below comments. I’ve found with Tweens tend to be fussy with what they wear and more into the current trend. Having experienced this with my own sisters, I think things like hand made dresses/formal wear would more appealing for this demographic.

  • With the right marketing/advertising I think you can persuade anyone anything…I think you would have to target the age-group that is just starting to make decisions for themselves, not the parents, and who tend to have a mind of their own (except when it comes to being similar to their peers!). And I think you’d have to appeal to them being in charge; using technology; and making sure it was ‘cool’ first, eg link to facebook and show their friends a virtual version …..Perhaps have something (an app or facebook compatable plugin) where they can design their own outfits (eg logo for a t-shirt; or put together a few colours/styles within reason of possibility for your materials etc.)… and then have someone make them. And it would have to be affordable… probably someone in China already doing this! Good luck.

  • Handmade markets may be a good avenue for marketing your clothes? These markets are quite big in some places and get a lot of people through them.

  • I’m a seamstress myself and have done lots of sewing, designing, knitting, crochet and embroideries. I’ve found that many girls and boys from the age group 12-16 year becomes rather particular in want they like and want to wear and that they prefer store bought clothes.

  • I buy lots of handmade products and support small business people. Maybe test the market with a few items and see how it goes? Best of luck with your endeavour. :)

  • If you make quality items that look good there will definitely be a market for them.

  • I would definitely love to buy your hand made clothes. You can’t beat home made and home grown as far as I’m concerned
