Hello!

I love gardening and am trying my hand at zucchini again. My first lot flowered but all the flowers dropped as though they had been cut. Research stated it was because all the flowers were males. Any tips on encouraging the girls to come along at the same time so I can get some fruit this time around?

  • Our problem right now is not enough bees to pollinate so I will have to do it myself with a paint brush.

  • Can you cross fertilise yourself using a cotton bud?

  • I didn’t know flowers have sexes ??

  • I was told you sometimes have to fertilise the flowers yourself to make the fruit. Sometimes the bees don’t do their job, or there’s not enough bees around. A small paint brush swished inside each flower is supposed to work. Not sure if this is your problem though :/

  • I find that when the plants are young, the flowers are nearly all male. As the plants get bigger, you should start to see some female flowers (assuming you have enough plants – I usually plant at least 5 to make sure I get enough female flowers). When you finally get some female flowers – hand pollinating is a must – don’t rely on the bees to do it for you.

  • Do you hand pollinate? I’ve never come across an all male flowering Zucchini but I would imagine it could be due to it lacking in something, try a all purpose fertilizer like seaSol to give the plant a bit of a boost.

  • I have nothing useful to say, but this site does throw up the most fascinating questions! I didn’t realise there were (in effect) girl and boy zucchinis.

  • You’re a better gardener than I am, I don’t think of plants being male and female – I have so much to learn, hope you find your answer.

  • Maybe plant some bee friendly flowers so the bees will come and help your zucchinis too.
