Hello!

The current recommendations state that from post breast feeding until the age of two, children should drink full fat milk. Then from age two, they can drink reduced fat (not skim) milk. Shouldn’t they still be drinking full fat milk for a few more years to strengthen their bones?

  • Babies and toddlers need fat in their diets for a variety of reasons, including healthy brain development. So it’s usually recommended that kids 1 to 2 years old drink whole milk. Then, if their growth is steady, it’s safe to switch to low-fat or nonfat (skim) milk.

Note: Kids at risk of becoming overweight can be switched to lower-fat milk before turning 2.

Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns about your child’s growth or nutritional needs.

  • No. The current guidelines take into account long term impacts like heart disease and chloresterol levels. Follow them.

  • I personally believe that full fat milk should be drink by everyone. Majority of skin Milks are topped up with sugar so far worse for you. Out it his way changing from full fat milk to skim milk is not going to help people lose weight so I don’t see why our children should not drink it.

  • You are correct . Best to discuss with doctor or childhood nurse if any concerns and they can advise you further .

  • I would definitely stick with full cream milk, for the whole family. There are plenty of other ways to reduce fat in your diet other than something as wholesome as milk.

  • Full fat milk is the healthiest option for everybody. So I definitely think he is too young to switch to low fat, I can’t think why the would need to swap at all

  • what two year old needs low fat milk – for goodness sake the world has gone mad!

  • I think it will depend on doctor reccomendations and what is needed for each individual child. I personally would continue with full fat though.

  • WHY CHANGE TO SKIMMED OR LIGHT MILK, GOODNESS IN REAL MILK FOR BABIES GROWTH. MY DOCTOR EVEN TOLD ME TO DRINK FULL MILK RATHER THAN SKIMMED i WAS USING AND i AM AN ADULT

  • i woudnt put any child under 10 on reduced fat milk unless they needed to lose weight because their bones need to develop

  • Personally I would give them full fat milk forever. Reduced fat “foods” are highly processed and can effect fat storage. I would rather give less of a real food item.

  • I would continue providing full fat milk indefinitely. The research is showing that reduced fat isn’t actually that healthy, and when it comes to milk, the vitamins that are in milk need the fat in it to be properly absorbed. We have recently switched to full fat milk due to the health benefits.

  • My thoughts are that with a healthy diet and active lifestyle, full fat milk will continue to be fine for my kids well beyond the age of 2.
