Hello!

How did you work out what you wanted to do with your life? I’m lost. I have been a mum for the last 7 years and am nearly ready to find a job/career. I have never had a proper career/job but I want to do something, I just don’t know what. I’m so indecisive and its not as easy as doing what I love because I don’t know what that is. How do I work that out? Please help

  • I’m trying to work all that out myself to be honest

  • In the same boat right now

  • What kind of things do you like to do now in your spare time. Are you willing to study?

  • I’m over 50, kids all grown up, and I still don’t know what career I would be happiest in. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a social/welfare worker. I look at me now, and I’m just too gullible, I would be sucked into all the bs sob stories

  • Sometimes you just take an opportunity/job that comes along and see how it pans out. If you don’t like it you can always move on.

  • It’s been a while since this question was posted. What did you end up doing?

  • I still don’t know and I’m 27 with my second on it’s way. I feel like ill never know. I Bounce back and forwards from many things.

  • That is such a hard question! Maybe try asking yourself do you want to work with people? If you answer yes, would you prefer the elderly, young children or just adults? Do you want to work 9-5 or don’t you mind shift work? Do you want minimal study for your career? Etc

  • Well, I always take comfort in something my Uncle (who is now retired) said – he still doesn’t know what he wants to do. I think as an adult there is an expectation that we should know certain things but in reality a career and jobs are secondary to family life. I only know a handful of people who are happy in their chosen careers – and they are teachers. You could always do an online personality test to see where your interests predominately lie and go from there. Start a course, start some volunteer work and go from there.

  • Sometimes a career’s advisor can help with working through possible career options and ideas. Might be an idea?

  • maybe try a careers adviser, my dad took me to one when I was younger to help me. they consider not only your knowledge but also your interests and give you a list of possible careers that would suit you. I have always found it hard as to me my most important and loved role is as a mum, but that showed up in my testing as well and I went into nursing soon after I did it.

  • Make a list of the things your like and what you think you are good at. Google career help for ideas where you can take some survey’s and try to get some ideas. Talk to friends and even talk to someone who you don’t know that well so they will give you a straight opinion on things.

  • im in the same boat, its harder than it seems, good luck

  • OK, what are you good at? What are your hobbies / interests? Would you prefer to work as part of a team, or by yourself? The answers to these questions will guide you towards what choices you coud make to find something rewarding to you.

  • I think these things take time. we all have been to this stage at some point. you never know what life has in store for u. Not until you try. i wish u all the best
