Hello!

How long does wine last after it is opened? – I love to cook with wine but don’t often drink it. How long after the bottle is open will it keep? And do you have to keep in fridge? I would love to know for both red & white wine.

  • Once opened, they say white and rosé wines can be kept for up to a week in the fridge. Red wines have a shorter staying power, and should be consumed in three to five days. Meanwhile, fortified wines, like sherries, ports and madeiras will last up to 28 days, and should be recorked and kept in a cool, dark place.
You can perfectly freeze wine in an ice cube tray or ice cube bag, ideal for cooking

  • If you’re looking to drink it, Red wine is only good for 1-2 days after opening, white I’d say no more than 5 days. If you’re looking to cook with them after they’re opened, you have a lot longer to use them.

  • I know I had bits in the wine, but that was a cask wine. I just know wine doesn’t last forever

  • I would only keep it for about a week or just over. You can usually smell when it goes yucky.

  • Cool! Really interesting reading the comments to this!

  • If you are going to cook with it then there’s no probs. White wine to drink turns to vinegar after about 3 days (in taste that is and when kept in the fridge). Red wine a week maybe 2. Buy cleanskin (cheap unlabelled bottles usually under $5) if it is for cooking and if in doubt, chuck it out! You can usually smell the difference of what it should smell like and when it turns

  • If you buy cask wine some will say it will last up to a month in the fridge. If it’s in a bottle maybe a day or 2 in the fridge. Some people say if you won’t drink with it don’t cook with it. Personally I’ve nearly given up cooking with wine as we throw so much out. If it smells like vinegar it’s gone bad.

  • Some answers I didn’t know about

  • Not very long!

  • Yeah thats not a question that gets asked often in this house!

  • I seal white wine and keep it in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. If it tastes or smells like vinegar chuck it out. Red wine never lasts long enough in our house to have to worry about storing it.

  • any left over wine is capped, refrigerated and used in cooking next few days.

  • there are some good comments here

  • the three day rule sounds like a good one

  • some useful answers here :)
