Hello!

I’m just wondering if anyone has made soap or candles before. Is it easy?

  • I’ve made candles in a candle factory in the Netherlands, it’s fun.

  • I would love to make candles but it depends on the cost as online they are very budget friendly!

  • I’ve made soap in high school at a science experiement and heard others who made candles are easy if you are patient . Look up the recipes for them and you will have an idea of the work involved .

  • No I haven’t but would love to give it a go!
Would be an ideal hobby that I could do from home in my own time.
Please make sure you let us know how it worked out for you!

  • This sounds so very interesting! I would like to do this.

  • I ended up doing a soap making course for $65 and loved it. I am hopefully going to make candles this weekend or next. I love doing it because its some me time and its fun.

  • Make your own soaps and candles are relaxing if you could set some time out just for yourself at first, get the basic idea, and then if you like, you could include bigger kids to be your assistants and have fun at the same time; and of course you can also plan a “ladies’ day in” and create something beautiful just for yourselves.

  • I have not made any but I did look online at making candles and saw lots of beginners kits. I am thinking about giving it a go.

  • I’m wanting to do the same. I know there are courses but can be quite expensive so I’m going to have a browse on the internet & order a starting kit.

  • I sure do! I make both cold process soap and soy wax candles. You can make it as hard or as easy as you want to really, and there’s a huge amount of information out there, just a google away :) If you want to be able to start ‘making’ without needing to buy from a specialised supplies store, CP soap can actually be made from products that you buy at a supermarket! Once you want to get a little more fancy, there are a heap of online stores to buy all your bits and pieces from (though be careful, it’s incredibly addictive!). As someone posted earlier, if you plan on selling CP soap, you will need to register with NICNAS, which is prohibitively expensive. I just make mine for personal use and gift giving :)

  • Save soap scrapes ,when enough ,soak in jar till all moist ,then use blender add to rubber moulds ,let dry & store .

  • To make soap powder for use in washing machine, grate Velvet or equivalent bar soap – not toilet soap and add Washing soda to mix. Great way to save money and get a good washing powder for your machine or hand washing

  • I would love to do this. I have saved a heap of old candle scraps for this purpose. I have even got the wick thread! I know that once the wax is melted you let it cool slightly then tie a length of wicking to a skewer then lay it across the container you intend to use for the candle, then gently pour the melted wax in and let it set. Voila! You have made your first candle!

  • It is easy to make soap however if you are making it from scratch using Lye you must be careful and use eye protection and gloves. If you intend on selling this soap at markets etc you must be registered with NICNAS to sell soap.

  • I recycle left over candle wax from existing candles into new ones. You can google some ideas and fiddle around until you come up with one that works for you. Grab one of those small $2 Kmart pans to melt the wax in. it is cheap and better for the environment. You can also recycle used vegetable oil to make oil lamps. they burn forever but as always be careful and better suited for outside use due to the oil sticking to walls etc upon burning. good luck. above all else it’s fun to reuse household items and come up with something new and you’ll find you come up with interesting ways to do things the more you practice
