Hello!

Just after I put my son to bed, he came down and said he felt sick. I think he really just wanted a chat so I told him to come down and see mum.I asked him how did he feel ” sick, sick” and he said his ” nerves ” felt cold and I think he said he felt a bit sad. It kinda broke my heart because I sometimes get sad sometimes.I’m just wondering do you think it’s wrong if I give him the day off school tomorrow and give him a ” mental health/ me day’? Just a day to spoil him, spend time together? Definitely wouldn’t do it in the middle of the year, but because the year is nearly over. Do other people give their kids ” me days”?

  • If he has had good attendance all year, go for it.

  • Wellbeing is a keyword in the WHO definition of health: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well- being and not merely the absence of disease or. infirmity”
When you look to this definition you have the answer; when we’re out of balance in anyway, it’s perfectly fine to take a sick-day

  • No, my kids only had a day off if they were really ill or a close relative died. Mental health wasn’t spoken about back then though

  • yes, 100%
My daughter still reminds me of the day we ‘wagged’ school and went to the beach when she was feeling down, apparently it was the best day, and importantly her voice was heard, her feelings mattered. We only did it once last year, but it helped.

  • When he goes back to school in the new year try to work out if he is being bullied. I hated school initially because I was teased because I had “red” hair, a bit taller than average (a lot of my relatives were tall), walked a little differently (I was very flat footed and had physio for about 6 years) and was naturally shy. A few used to “gang up” on me in the school yard then hit and kick me until one of the boys did to one of them what a gang of them were doing to me. They left me alone after that. I will always be grateful to the boy for that. ….Maybe there was a clash of personalities with one of my brother’s teachers too. Mum was asked to go to a meeting, then the teacher couldn’t tell Mum what he was doing wrong. She said my brother was just annoying and walked out of the Principal’s office. Do you have any older children at the same school? If they had the same teacher at all, they may be compared against each other. Good Luck opening getting the teacher to admit it though. Another teacher did that did admit to that at a Parent/Teacher meeting.

  • Oh wonderful that your son will come and talk to you. I don’t think there is anything wrong with taking a day like that every now and then. Sometimes things can get too much for adults, so it should be expected that children feel the same way.

  • The odd day here and there would be fine, just to get the time to talk and connect.

  • I think this is a perfect idea as long as they don’t try to use excuses when they don’t really need one

  • Yes!

My daughter is in grade 1 this year and have admittedly had to give her a few mental health days… screaming the night before of a sore stomach.. then we find out it’s because of school… we do find it flares when she is also tired (generally a Thursday) so by the end of the week it’s a quiet afternoon, snack, showers, dinner, homework, tv and bed, and they know if the comply they will feel better the next morning for resting!

When given mental health days, I just keep it quiet and let my daughter rest… and give her some alone time.. that gives her the best chance to heal.. she gets a little overwhelmed with a lot going on at once, and I feel for her, because we have had such a hard year as a family!

    Hang in there mumma!
You are doing an amazing job, some days we can’t cope ourselves so imagine how our little babies feel when they feel the same way!
One day at a time, and a method that works for you and your family❤️❤️

I hope the rest of the year goes well, and enjoy a Chrissy break ❤️

  • Mental health days are needed for adults and kids are the same. One day here and there won’t be a problem xx

  • I think we should

  • Mental health days are so very important for everyone – including kids – I hope he is feeling much brighter and happier now.

My kids know they can have at least 2 mental health days per month if they need them, and those days are theres to relax and do what they want to destress, switch off etc.

  • It’s called a personal care day. They are important to have. If he were at school on that day then he probably wouldn’t be concentrating any way.

  • Yeah sometimes my daughter have the feeling although she is not much expressive then i make plan for outdoor picnic

  • I guess it depends on the age and what would be missed at school but mental health is an important thing too
