Hello!

“I was wondering if you could post a question for me? I am an at home mum whose husband lost his job before Christmas and can’t find work. We have 8 children and I was wondering if any mums had any money saving tips for cooking large meals for 8 – 10 people on a tight budget or how to shop for a large family and be able to buy all the essentials. Do I buy in bulk? From the supermarket or online and where? Thank you.” Do you have any money saving tips?

  • Buying online in bulk will always save you money, dry goods and staples are easy to buy but remember you need some good storage jars. I buy nuts, seeds, rice, buckwheat, quinoa, tahini, for example and I put some in the freezer to kill anything and the rest in glass jars. Just google or use another search engine “buy wholefoods in bulk”. Wholefoods will keep kids fuller for longer. Also might be a good idea to start a veggie patch if you can or join a community garden where you can grow or buy cheap veggies.

  • Definitely buy in bulk when things you need are on special. Shop around a bit, find bargains and specials

  • Buy in bulk on special where you can. Also go to the supermarket at the end of the day or first thing in the morning and buy market down products eg bread, fruit and veg and meat.

  • Some great ideas on here. Also look at food combining expenses with a neighbour or a friend. In our area you can buy direct from farms who will butcher meat for you and portion it up so you can split costs with someone. If you have a chest freezer, you can freeze it and use as needed.

  • Costco or Aldi are great for shopping in bulk. Slow cooker meals do a large number of people. Soups and bread stretch the budget here. In summer we have a number of salads – using vegetables that are on special.

  • Always buy your coffee, cheese, toilet paper on special & at say half price.Your best products same name brands always buy on sale.I buy baked beans only when $1 .Noodles on sale as well, you can save half your money.

  • Some great ideas here.

  • The magazines from the big supermarkets have great inexpensive recipes. Also the magazine Recipes+ has a weekly shopping list for these recipes. Try to avoid cheap carbohydrates and stock up on fruits and vegetables. Some supermarkets discount meats on the day of use date by significantly. So if you are happy to freeze that day, do it. In fact a large freezer may be your best friend.

  • Buying in bulk is budget friendly if you have space for items.

  • I hope things have worked out for you and your family.

  • YOU SHOULDN’T BE AFRAID OR TOO PROUD TO SEEK HELP IF YOU NEED IT

  • yeah i wonder how you went. christmas always bring bills

  • I hope things have turned around for you this year, I find I always save a lot when u grocery shop online with pre prepared menus in mind, not only can you discover specials, compare proves but also avoid impulse buying.

  • curries and casseroles with lots of potatoes, carrots etc help with making meals go around

  • make a lot of foods that contain rice, make your own sweets like biscuits and breads
