Hello!

My 5 yr old daughter attends daycare 4 days a week, and tends to play by herself. I’m afraid she doesn’t have many ‘special’ friends to play with, how can I assist her in finding friends. I work part time and most of her friends from mothers group are now attending school in different suburbs. Any help would be appreciated!

  • ask them at daycare how she responds to other kids. Maybe she is lacking confidence – try getting a book about building confidence.

  • She’s only 5. My eldest didn’t have a lot of friends at daycare. Fast forward, he’s now 8 and has a lovely group of friends. She will get there. Arrange play dates but don’t force her. Some kids prefer to have one close friend than a whole gang too.

  • play dates, school activities so she makes different circle of friends and don’t make a big deal of it, she will make some great friends, but needs to do this herself x

  • my six year old had some issues with how to approach other kids and how to join in someone suggested we contact the local Occupational theropy group run especially for kids of that age group. They had six sessions with other kids with the same issues which helped teach them how to interact with confidence and how to share and take turns, its not important if you win the game just that you are having fun joining in etc. Since attending that group at the start of this school year my son has started grade 1 and now has a small group of friends he has made using the skill he learnt during the sessions.

  • My nearly 5 year old is at kinder this year and he says he doesn’t have any friends at school. I asked his teacher and they said he spends most of his time playing on his own or along side other kids…I think it’s pretty normal at that age to not have close friends…. as long as she is not distracted about it, I wouldn’t worry too much…..

  • does she ask about friends? when will she go to school? try online, local face book pages? see if there are 5 r olds in the area that want to go on a play date?

  • well maybe the children at daycare are young in terms of things that they like. Try to teach her how to approach other children and ask them what they like. She might like the quiet time anyway.
