Hello!

My 3 yr old and 10 month old can’t have even a tiny bit of chocolate without having issues with their bowels. Sometimes playing up within half an hour and lasting up to a week. It’s the same with yoghurt yet my 3 yr old is fine with cheese, milk and other dairy products so I’m at a loss with what this could be? We are waiting to get into a pediatrician but just interested to see if anyone else has had the same issue. TIA.

  • For my youngest I asked the pediatrician for a referral to see a gastroenterologist as it goes out of the scope of competence of most pediatricians.

  • Are they getting enough fiber, fiber is needed for bowels to work properly, lots of fruit and veggies, and keep away from processed foods, especially cereals, munchie bars, sweets, chocolates etc. You could see a naturopath too.

  • One of the things I also do is giving my kids a good probiotic, it’s good for the gut health.

  • What exactly are the symptoms? I would journal for a while food intake and reactions. You may want to ask a referral for a gastroenterologist

  • Sounds like an intolerance.
Yes my 2 eldest had bowel issues on gluten and my youngest has a diary intolerance.

  • Definitely sounds diet related. Good luck.

  • dear me hope all goes well

  • For now just avoid these foods and try out others make a list of everything that does this and there may be a key ingredient.

  • My 14 month old daughter has had bowel problems since she was 3 months old, I had changed my diet whilst breast feeding with no improvement and she still now has problems, we can’t pin point any specific food or type of foods. Doctors say it is something she will just grow out of

  • Hope everything goes well for your boys at the doctors

  • As they can tolerate milk its not lactose intolerance. Probably something specific to chocolate which does have all sorts of added sugars, stabilisers etc. I hope you find your answer. For the future, I wonder if really good quality chocolate might be tolerated.

  • Oh dear :( hope you get some answers from the Pediatrician!

  • I haven’t had any issues like this in my family, sorry to hear it is happening to you and yours. I would steer clear of dairy, sounds like a dairy intolerance. :(

  • My daughter has fructose malabsorbtion and its becoming more diagnosed and it affects the bowels. Its complex but its the fake sugar and naturally occurring sugars in foods and can also have gluten or dairy intolerance.

  • My brother is like that he can’t have gluten
