My daughter is 2.5 years old and has in the last week developed a fear of leaves, to the point where she will scream and start to cry until I pick her up and comfort her. She used to love to play with them (kick them around, pick them and bring them inside, throw them on top of herself and run through them) now this has started. Has anyone had the same problem where their child has become afraid of something they previously loved and if so how did you get through and past it?  Thank you in advance.

  • I would think something happened what makes her scared. When it doesn’t decrease I would suggest to get a referral to a child psychologist. You can also do a google for Ataps approval, which gives you access to free psychological treatment.
Then google which Gp’s do ATAPS referrals in the area you live.

  • My son used to live the vaccum but now will scream and cry when he sees it. I’m not sure what it is but it just developed from no where. I’ve recently started to let him hold it before I turn it on and that seems to help a little. Maybe pick up leaves yourself and just show her that there not hurting you and in your arms she can touch/hold them. Good luck!!

  • This sounds like she may have experienced some past trauma and you may not even know about it . Maybe a professional child psychologist can help her , as she would not be suddenly scared out of the blue . it must be from something of the past Good luck.

  • Hope she has overcome this – advise if you had success and what worked-Ta

  • Maybe a bit of tough love ,don’t comfort her ,just let her be till calms down ,suggest going leaf prints with paint ,make it fun ,she might forget her fear ..

  • Hi, my daughter has the same problem. I live in New Delhi. She is now 8.5. we were told initially that she would outgrow it, but has not happened yet. The fear is to the point where in she sees a tree and will only walk with her head up looking at the leaves so as to avoid any falling ones. I have really seen her turn white with fear when a dried leave got stuck in her shoe. would like to have some help if someone has any information on this.

  • Maybe if you ask her why she is now afraid if before she liked to play with them. Then tell her you will touch the leaves together, maybe try playing a game in the leaves and see if she will slowly lose fear.

  • Our DD loved Thomas the Tank Engine then one day became very scared of him, she wouldn’t say why, she grew out of it. I hope your daughter does as well, all the best to her.

  • Maybe ask her what scares her about the leaves ?

  • Great advise from Ritareet. I have to agree she will grow out of it. Im sure you have already asked but maybe something happened at some stage, a bug or something might have bitten her. Its hard to get them to explain at that age I know. Goodluck

  • Maybe just an age thing? My son same age is scared (terrified) of fluffy stuff like dryer lint, broom dust & vacuum fluff.

  • I remember my daughter having the most unusual fears at that age too. Fears that made her hysterical! Each of them she just seemed to forget about or grow out of after a number of months. I wouldn’t be too concerned. Maybe she saw a bug on one and has become freaked out. Show her how when you touch the leaves, that you are safe, nothing bad happens and you are having fun. She will eventually come around. Just be patient. :-)
