Hello!

My 18 mo old only has 7 teeth so it’s hard to feed her apples and the like because she can bite bits but not chew. She got used to eating biscuits that melt in her mouth. She will eat a banana from time to time, for lunch and dinner she will only have soup with rice. It’s so difficult feeding her she is so picky. Should I just be tough and eliminate her biscuits so she will be forced to eat fruits as snacks? By the way if she dislikes dinner, she will have formula instead. :-(

  • First step, eliminate all rubbish food, eg biscuits. Keep offering different foods, you’re bound to find something else she’ll like. And don’t give up, kids are stubborn, parents need to be more stubborn :)

  • Our DD was the same, I just gave her what she liked and slowly tried to introduce other foods.

  • My son (4 years old) is a very fusty eater. He only eats pasta, rice and 4 types of veges. He does like most fruits though. At 18 months I used to steam his apples and carrots so they were softer but retained the flavor. Since then we have slowly introduced other foods and I do give them to him often – even if he doesn’t eat them. Hopefully one day he will pick it up and try it. I also give him a multi vitamin.

  • Have you tried boiling the apples a bit so they are softer, and give spaghetti for dinner as pasta is soft?

  • Great advice here as usual. also maybe stew her apples till soft, that way her is not choking on hard pieces. Good luck and all the best to you both.

  • Thanks so much. I feel bad because at fay care everyone else eats fruits and she just wants bikkies. Thanks for your advice

  • At this age, our son lived on milk and peanut butter sandwiches. He went from eating everything to just a few favourites. However he gradually added more to his diet and now eats anything. Its hard but be patient and offer different things to try.

  • Tots are traditionally picky eaters! All you can do is offer her a wide variety if flavours and textures and let her graze at her own speed. With my little one I generally mash or blitz (with a bar mix) foods that would require chewing.

  • Hello. I havnt had this trouble with my son as yet he is 14 months but in the last couple of weeks i have noticed he is starting to prefer sweeter things like biscuits and things so i thought i would cut them out for a while and he is back on track abit more. I don’t give him apples to eat by him self because he only has five teeth and chokes on the skin but i do not peel them because that will cause another fussyness. I give him oranges, bananas, grapes, kewifruit etc but i try not to give him to much fruit because i wont home to eat his veg to he has all veg imaginable and eats most foods we eat. Hope thus helps xx
