Hello!

We are expecting our first baby and we have limited funds and wondering what products are best to buy new and what is just as good as second hand. We have purchased a new pram so far which our parents are paying for and was wondering about the cot, bassinet etc. Thanks

  • I would get most of what you need second hand, most things will likely still be in pretty good condition just no longer needed by the seller. Save the money on expensive purchases to pay for all bubs care needs – nappies, formula etc..

  • I agree with BellaB that a second hand cot is fine, just check the condition and in regards to the Mattress, those are often water proof and easy to wipe down

  • A second hand cot is fine, though you might want to consider a new mattress. Otherwise I’d be willing to consider second hand for pretty much everything.

  • Everything can be a second hand except the car seat (so you know it hasn’t been been in an accident)

  • If you can find second hand things in excellent condition (a lot if baby stuff is in near new condition after being used as it’s not used for long) I wouldn’t buy 2nd hand nappies, singlets, bottles etc yucky!

  • We bought new car seats and cot with our first one. other things were all hand down from friends and family.

  • We bought most things second hand after the first baby. The only things I would be concerned about are the car seats and cot….just make sure if you buy second hand that you know exactly where they have come from and how long they were used. This protects you in terms of safety. Other items can be brought second hand, no worries! Most of my kids (2 & 4) have clothes purchased from FB buy and sell sites. Buying new seems a total waste of money if quality second hand items are available!

  • I love second. Just be prepared to say no thanks and walk away when checking out a second hand item if it isn’t good enough. I borrowed a bassinet from a friend and was given a cot. There are buy swap sell baby sites on fb which are good. We bought some books and second hand clothes from salvos. Also a second hand car seat on eBay (had to do a bit of research for safety standards, it was only 2 years old and not in a crash). Big w and target are good when they have sales too! For storing clothes I bought a cheap cube storage shelf with the soft boxes rather then a set of drawers (from target but Bunnings and Kmart do them too). Buying off grandparents is great because they’re usually in good condition and only used sometimes.

  • New mattress; car seat and bath. Other items in good and clean condition should be fine.

  • For me it would be a car seat and cot anything else 2nd hand is great

  • Second hand is fine – a lot of my friends have second hand items.. New Car seat, Mattress, & sheets would be my suggestion.. other items should be fine :)

  • a lot of things are fine second hand but i would get a new car seat and cot and matress

  • i purchased everything 2nd hand but a car seat. that was the one thing felt the safest buying new, i got it from target when they went on half price. he has mostly 2nd hand clothing , 2nd hand cot/mattress – just make sure its up to date with the ‘sids’ risks. my pram is also 2nd hand :) nothing wrong , babies are expensive. ps also try aldi nappies they are awesome , and the ‘once upon a time wipes’ from safeway.

  • The one thing I would recommend new and not second hand is a car seat, you cant be sure if the person selling it has been in accident its not worth the risk.

  • Clothes are always fine second hand. So are walkers and stuff like that. I would get bottles and soppy cups new. Used crib is fine. But get a new mattress.
