Hello!

Any tips for painting furniture? My husband and I want to update our dining table and chairs, currently a natural looking varnished wood. There’s a million pinterest tutorials, but it’s hard to find ones that suit an Australian context. What paints do I use? What ones should I avoid? Do I varnish over the top of the paint when we’re done?

  • I would do a lot of research over the internet as well as getting advice from a hardware store.

  • I like to spray furniture… no brush stokes.

  • I would seek some professional advice from Bunnings or a similar store; they have experts that can best advise you.

  • The bunnings idea is a good one

  • I know that Bunnings often run free workshops – maybe check out what they have coming up

  • you only use varnish if your going to stain it. any paint will work, but I would use a gloss for a high sheen and one that is easily wiped down

  • You can ask to the Bunnings staff. They can give a great recommendation for you.

  • maybe speak to bunnings or master

  • It all depends on the finish you want. I came across a product at Bunnings called Zinsser, it is an undercoat that goes straight over a whole range of surfaces including varnish, so you no longer need to sand. I did my varnished desk in my craft room (stressed it) using Zinsser and it was so quick and easy. All the well known paint brands are good and as to varnishing the surface, that will depend on how you want the job to look or protect the paint.

I didn’t varnish my craft desk as I’m a messy crafter and prefer the well worn look – if it was varnished I’d be worried about stuff sticking to it and getting scratches on it.

Hubby always says a good paint job starts with preparation.

  • I always ask at Bunning as they are helpful in pointing out which products will suit what you are trying to do.

  • I think the better homes and gardens website might have some good suggestions

  • Go to your local hardware store and ask them for suggestions. Take a picture of your table so they know what you are working with and maybe take a photo of what you have in mind for the finished product (try googling for something you like).

  • use a good oil based paint and make sure you sand between coats

  • u could try googling it thats a hard question

  • i hope you found a good solution
