Hello!

Our girls start prep next year and at the moment we are trying to decide between public or private schooling. We have a choice of a very small public school (under 200 students) or a small private school (under 1000 students up to year 12). If we send the girls to a public school we would create a investment portfolio for them with the money we save in school fees. But it is most likely we will send them to the private high school. I was wondering what other parents think or consider when deciding on schools? Thanks

  • I would try public first and then see if your child is happy and doing well or not.

  • All my children went to private schools but even with private schools there are quite a difference between them. Most expensive does not mean the best for your child though. Each child is different so go with your child to visit all the prospective schools (public and private) and involve your child in deciding which school you both think is best.

  • Check out both schools and go with your gut. A small school that is public can sometimes be as good as a private school.

  • I would have sent my kids to private school if I could have afforded it

  • The public school we attend is totally wonderful,& I wouldn’t be happier anywhere else,it’s doing my child wonders.

  • This is always s tough question for parents we have already decided to send ours to a private school but it depends what the schools are like in your area

  • I love the public system and I would never consider the private one. In particular not for primary school.

  • It depends on the schools; regardless of whether they are private or public. Also; depends on the kids and what works best for them. Children thrive in different environments. Go along and get a feel for the school. Also; invest in some future as well; even a little goes a long way. Good Luck!

  • Some public schools are better than others and the same is true for Private its not as simple as one vs the other. I think public school is best for children especially if you can see exactly what they are learning and get feedback where needed talking to teachers etc. I agree with putting money away for the future too. Well Done!

  • I would love to send my daughters to private school but we can’t afford it. I think if you can it is well worth it.

  • There is nothing wrong with Australian public schools, in fact it is our preference. High school is a little different especially if you can afford to invest in their education, but for primary i would alwats say public

  • I would send them to public school so you can save extra money for there future…

  • If a child wants to learn they will do it regardless of whether they are in public or private school.
I believe it comes down to the school you send them to, as you could have the perfect public school and a ok private school I know where I would be sending them.
You need to investagate both the public and private schools in your area and go with which one is best for your child and not just because it’s a public or private school.

  • there are some good comments here

  • It really depends on the schools involved. My daughter started off at a private school but we’ve since changed schools to the local public one. Since changing from private to public my daughter has improved 1000 times over. The new school was actually shocked at how far behind she was for her year level. It goes to show that you DON’T always get what you pay for.
