I have boy/girl twins. They will be 3 in June and can start kindy next year. They were born premature and are a bit behind compared to my son at this age. We have started toilet training but its not as easy as the first time. I’m finding it quite hard with 2. My question is I’m worried they aren’t ready for kindy, but then worried if I don’t send them they will fall more behind. I know they have to be toilet trained first but worried they won’t be in time if I decide to send them. What should I do?

  • Stop stressing and persevere with toilet training so they are ready for kindy. You’re putting too much pressure on yourself

  • Don’t worry too much these things tend to work themselves out!

  • My daughter picked up heaps from kindy

  • No I don’t mean pre kindy
Next year 2015 they start Kindergarten when they are 4
We have tried to start the training again since my recovery is going better
We will slowly see how they go, we have enrolled them but will see what happens by Christmas

  • I would be holding them at home until they are trained, they wont fall behind in anything as children don’t start schooling until they are 5

  • Do you mean you’re sending your children to pre-school? I don’t know any kindergartens who take children at 3 years of age. In any case, if you are worried that they may be too young and not ready to go, you can always hold them back. Kids do not have to go to pre-school before going to kindy – there are benefits for sending the kids to pre-school so they get into a routine and be prepared for life as a kindergartener, but it’s not compulsory. We know plenty of people who are holding their kids back as they believe their kids will be better off being one of the older kids in their class than one of the youngest. Good luck.

  • at three they shouldn’t be starting kindy, they don’t start that until they are 5. I think you mean preschool and they don’t fall behind or miss out even if they never attend this and just go straight to school when they are 5

  • When you say Premature, what exactly do you mean? my daughter was born at 26 weeks, I did everything like Kindy etc on time. Treat them as if they were full term, its the best thing for them to feel like others their age.

  • I would still enrol them or there may not be vacancies later. Don’t fret about it too much but keep trying. A 2 y.o. boy was asked if he wanted to use the toilet “like a big boy”.
A few weeks down the track he sometimes he says “big boy wee” and heads for the toilet.
My brother and I are 3 years apart. When I started Kindy the manager asked Mum if he had been enrolled. She was advised to enrol him and notify them if she changed her mind for any reason as there is sometimes waiting lists. I was 4y.o and It was Kindy. I never went to childcare.

  • Don’t worry too much, there’s plenty of time til they start next year. Everything will most likely fall into place by then.

  • If you dont feel they will be ready next year then don’t send them. If they aren’t ready they will fall behind

  • I would wait a bit. Plenty of time til next year, and they will develop a lot between now and then. No need to stress yet!

  • I have filled out their enrollments and are just going to see how they go
toilet training is on hold while im recovering from my surgery
but hopefully they will be ready
    thanks everyone

  • from the center will give toilet train aswell do sont you worry

  • you can always look at child care centers as they would put them in a room which suites them and they also help with toilet training. Alot take them from new born to after school care
