Hello!

Hi all, I was just wanting some food ideas for a school canteen we are starting to operate again. We want healthy food that kids will enjoy e.g jelly cups with fruit. Can you help me with suggestions?

  • Home made sausage rolls and party pies, salad sandwiches and sushi!

  • yogurt. dips (hummus, babaganush) with crackers or carrot sticks, cheese and crackers

  • Healthy multi grain sandwiches. B.L.T grated carrot and grated cheese with mayo is yummy. Make rounds of sandwiches and sell with an apple or banana in a deal or something .

  • Just realised this post is a few years old so hope your canteen is running smoothly.

  • Fresh healthy salad sandwiches and wraps, rice paper rolls and sushi!

  • It great to have a healthy canteen , not like the old days full of junk food only. Our canteen had wraps in meat and salad , fruit and nuts, sushi rolls, mixed salads , wholemeal bread sandwiches , vegie chips etc .

  • Frozen pineapple slices, seasonal fruit cups, maybe sushi, frozen fruit yogurt.

  • Fried rice is usually a crowd pleaser. Maybe sausage rolls and party pies with hidden veggies. Muffins are good too, you could have sweet and savoury. Pike lets are easy too and you can add fruit to these, top with yoghurt etc

  • Watermelon slices ,fruit kebabs,frozen orange slices, frozen yoghurt in a cone,or cup,with fruit salad.cheese/salad plate.cheese/ spinach triangles,corn fritters.

  • Lots of great responses here. DEfinitely do the apple slinky!

  • Veggie sticks with dipping sauce
    whole pieces of fruit
home made jelly (no jelly crystals)
    fruit kebabs
    soups
    fried rice with chicken kebab
    spaghetti bolognese
    pasta bake with cauliflower sauce

  • Fruit salad, wraps with chicken an veg, some fruit slice.

  • Home made soups, in cups, spaghetti in foam cups, for cold winter days, our school always had a soup day, it would be a tomato soup and the kids would get a wholemeal roll with it, they loved it and it was cheap and economical to provide. Another thing that is popular is French sticks with margarine and vegemite, cut up into 3 to 4 inch pieces, a lot of kids would like this with a basic salad in a bowl, because they are getting something naughty and filling whilst eating their salad. Our school canteen also has a hot dog day once a week, low fat, low salt, and the kids love them, they are again the naughty treat, most kids know what they are supposed to be eating and enjoy the once a week treat, it is also a good money spinner as the healthy foods are expensive and can be out of reach of a lot of parents, and you do not want to go down the fried food line. good luck, but give the kids options to have with the really healthy stuff, it is all a balance.

  • fruit!
    banana piklets
    zucchini slice
    popcorn

  • apple slinkies
    fruit juice pops
    salad wraps
    salad rolls
    toasted ham, cheese, tomatoe sandwiches
    egg sandwiches
    healthy lasagna
