Hello!

I was wondering if any other mums have had any experiences with street Christmas parties? We have lived on our street for 3 years now and do not really socialise with our neighbours. We say a friendly hello but that is it. This year we have been invited to a Christmas party bbq and I’m not sure whether to go. If we don’t go, I’m worried we will be seen as scrooges, but if we do go I’m worried it will be awkward as we don’t know any of our neighbours! Just after some advice, thanks!

  • It would be a good idea as you will meet your neighbours. Initially keep the conversation general until you get to know them. It is nice to meet them even if in future you only wave to each other or just say “hello” when you can. I found that to be great when I was home alone, When the neighbours went past we would give each other a wave if they were in their cars. If we close to the footpath we would often call out to each other. Sometimes we would have a short general conversation which was great. Most of my neighbours worked do I didn’t see them very often anyway. Those across the road always waves. It was nice to be acknowledged.

  • I would go and check it out,it might be alot of fun!

  • I went the first year we moved into our street and it was okay – I met a lot of my neighbours, but it was also a little awkward at times. I haven’t been back since, mainly because I find it hard to make small talk.

  • I have always loved the idea of a Christmas street party, but have never been to one. I wouldn’t in my neighbourhood, but if you know mostly everyone in your street, I think if would great fun! Go and have a blast, and if you don’t, you can leave early and don’t go the following year LOL

  • Yes!!! There really interesting comments on this!

  • good for it its good 2 know your neighbours we used 2 do this every year when i was young. i remember playing with the local kids we had a ball.

  • there are some good comments here

  • I think it really depends on the individual street and whether there are nice neighbours in your area.

  • Street parties is not my thing I have to admit. I much prefer the security of knowing the people that will turn up to meet my family members.

  • They are totally awesome and the most amazing way of ‘making new friends’. Make sure everyone is invited though, missing someone could be very hurtful.

  • Our street Chrissy Party a month ago was awesome. We were new comers and now we’re part of the street family looking after eachothers homes when any one of us goes away on hols..

  • hope it went well if you gave it a go! cant hurt to know who your neighbours are

  • They seem fun. give it a go!

  • I think,it is always good to attend and you can always politely leave early if it is awkward and uncomfortable

  • you never know until you go! we organised a street party when we first moved into our new house, so we could use it as a guise to get to know the neighbours. some of them are a bit awkward, but take some wine and all will be good!
