Hello!

Summer is almost here and I’m wondering if  it’s OK to apply sunscreen on babies? If yes, which brand is the best for the gentle skin?

  • One of ours is actually allergic to Banana Boat. Instead of no sunburn she came out in huge bright red areas. Where we put extra on more vulnerable areas she was even redder. The thing was she decided she didn’t want to play in the sun after about 15 minutes early in the morning. A trip to the Dr. confirmed our theory.
Interesting information I received from pharmacists as three different locations (I wanted to make sure they weren’t promoting one brand regardless of quality) is that the main difference between baby and toddler sunscreen and those adults prefer is the adult ones have fragrance in them with chemicals in them to retain the fragrance.(why put unnecessary chemicals on your skin). I tried both on different hands. There was no difference in the quality of protection.

  • Banana Boat has lots of child friendly options, lots of age appropriate ones as well as different ways to apply it. But you really need to try some out and see what sort of reaction your bub may or may not have. But definitely apply it, there is a lot of baby friendly brands out there

  • yeah we use banana boat. it is great to pick up when on special as well.

  • We use Milk baby sunscreen. It says it’s suitable for children from 3 months, but we didn’t use it until they were at latest 6 months.

  • Banana boat is good on my kids skin. Two of my three kids have had issues with different kids and this brand seems to be gentle on their skin, they get bad ezcema. I have also found some brands have reacted on my other kids skin if i use it and she plays in the sand at the beach. But i have yet to have a issue of this happening with banana boat.

  • The votes i think go to cancer council and banana boats. My bub is 7 months :) thanks mums for great advice

  • I use cancer council brand for kids or banana boat sensitive. Pharmacies usually give great advice

  • I suggest you speak to a Qualified Pharmacist. Remember some are only Pharmacist Assistants. There are specific Baby/Toddler ones.
I have spoken to a few pharmacists in different suburbs of Adelaide. The difference between the one for toddlers etc. and the one that adults use is :: the adult ones have fragrance added in them and chemicals added to keep the fragrance in.

  • I think that they suggest bubs should be 6 months before you use sunscreen.

We started with Hamiltons toddler roll on.

  • We were told not to use anything if they were under 6 months (I think it was) as their skin is to sensitive and just to try and cover them up as much as you can with hats or clothes.
For this summer we will be using banana boat babies.

  • We try and avoid it but if you need to we use Cancer Council Kids Sunscreen SPF 50+ and Banana Boat Kids SPF 50+ but there is actually a baby one that we used to start off with as their skin is very sensitive but can’t remember what its called. Our youngest now is 3 years old
