Hello!

Hi, my 7 year old is a VERY fussy eater n doesn’t like a lot lol, so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what he may like, some days he will only eat pizza but lately he has been more open to trying new foods so figured now is the time to push things a bit. Thanx

  • Thanx for all the fab ideas, many things to try here. weve been having more success lately which is a big improvement. x

  • I have the same problem. Have you tried a reward system, each time your son has eaten something new he gets a sticker, then after so many stickers he get a reward.

  • Would he do an omlette? You can hide many things in an omelette. we make our omelette in a pan to look like a pizza then we cut it up the same way.

  • thank you for asking that question my daughter is such a fussy eater it’s so hard to get how to eat a meal properly especially sitting down in one go.. so thank you to all the mums who have given advise on this topic . it’s been greatly appreciated

  • We gave some vegetables different names and made up stories about them.
Cauliflower = white trees Broccoli =green trees I don’t we had a nickname for silver beet . OK with mild cheese sauce on them. Our elder one isn’t a huge cheese fan but loves it in cooking. She doesn’t like raw tomatoes but will eat it cooked in other food. A lot of bought tomatoes have a strange taste compared with home grown. Tomatoes are acidic too. Beetroot is a food you like or don’t. My brother didn’t like it. He called it garden dirt. He fell over once and got some in his mouth. One of ours likes mushrooms raw but not cooked.
Two kids we used to mind loved sausages. If their parents didn’t watch, the sausages got eaten first and they reckoned they didn’t have room for their vegetables. Yes, they were vegetables they loved as well. Remedy was they had to eat some of their vegetables before they were given their sausages, then gradually the food quantities were adjusted. Do they like fruit cooked but not raw.?? Try giving them small serves of that to encourage fruit content and also encourage them to eat the meat and veg. before giving the fruit as a reward in the early stages. It works wonders with some kids. Don’t overload their plates. That scares some kids. Try smaller serves and encourage them to ask for more before increasing it slowly. We were encouraged to taste a food a a couple of different times. If we didn’t like lijke it after that at least we had tried it. Don’t force feed them with it in case they are allergic to it. My cousin was allergic to one particular vegetable. Even if it was hidden so well that he couldn’t taste it he was still sick from it. It is a vegetable that naturally contains suphur in it. They later discovered that if the lid was lifted a few times during the cooking process it let the “gas” from it escape and he gradually managed to tolerate it. The method also helps some people with digestion problems. The method works with cabbage too.

  • does he like noodles? You can make a noodle slice/ loaf with hidden veggies in it. Plenty of recipes for this on the net. Maybe try corn fritters, French toast with bacon, make your own nuggets. if he like ham and pineapple on a pizza, maybe try in on top of some chicken (Hawaiian chicken). Most kids like bolognaise, but if he doesn’t like pasta maybe try it with rice or mash. My son (4yrs) loves sausages. I buy his favourite the mini sausages (chipolatas). I grill them a little, add some onion, tomatoes and still beef or veg stock to make a sauce (thicken with a little corn flour if needed) and let the sausages cook in the sauce for 15min. Serve with rice or mash.

  • A variety of fruits & raw vegies is a great starter for fussy eaters where they can create their own designer plate. My grandkids still like making fruit faces & eating them!

  • Maybe try something similar to pizza to test the waters? ham and cheese pinwheels/scrolls maybe. Home made pizza with few “healthy toppings”?

  • I would try things like salmon we cook ours in the oven for about 15 – 20 mins served with plain rice. My son is the same age and just love his brain food as we call it. He is slowly trying new foods were try to introduce a new one evry two weeks He also love garlic prawns. and grilled fish. But we see this kind of food as a weekly treat more than a every night meal. I also find if there is a new food to be tried it has to be done without any other kids around that may say yuk as soon as he hears that word they seem to remember it. Thats the biggest battle with my three kids.

  • Have u tried muffins and hid vegies in them by adding purée
