Hello!

I’d like to throw a Thanks Giving Dinner for my family this year, (isolation rules permitted) but I have no idea where to start. What is mandatory at Thanks Giving dinner? I have turkey and pumpkin pie on my list, but thats it!

  • Thanks Giving celebrates the Harvets and the positive things that have occured that past year. In the US its held in November and thats when its starting to get quite cold but here it would be getting hot and our crops would be different.
When I was in the US we had roast turkey and candied yams….sweet potato with marsh mallows which to me was quite odd bit apparently its a thing. They also had macaroni cheese which is very different to our mac and cheese and to me was flavourless.

  • I have been doing this for the last few years but for me its more about everyone getting together and appreciating all that we have, rather than the food itself ( although this is great too but it doesn’t really matter what it is) Its such a feel good tradition I’m surprised more people in Australia don’t do it.

  • So long as there is turkey on the menu you are halfway there. Main thing is to have many friends to celebrate it with you from what I have found. Hope you have a great day.

  • I am American and my family have moved away so I now have my friends who are Australian come and help me celebrate. If Thanksgiving isn’t special to you because you weren’t born in the US then just choose whatever you would like to eat really…it can even be an afternoon tea. Make it your own. Even celebrate it with just your immediate family.

  • I don’t think you need to make it a traditional US spread. Choose what dishes you like!

  • Being in Australia, you could make it whatever you want. A lovely idea too by the way

  • A lovely idea indeed to look at where we are thankful for. Personally I think there are no rules what need to be at the Thanks giving Dinner; you can make those yourself

  • A great idea to create celebrations at home and for us to be thankful for what we do have.

  • I love a thanksgiving dinner. Glad you are doing a Turkey but make sure you have the stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce to go with!

  • If its to be thankful for what you have here in Australia, the why not make it Australian? Aussie food all the way, making family member favourites

  • Pumpkin pie for dessert is a big part (usually served with whipped cream) they also usually have yams (sweet potato) and of course Turkey with cranberry sauce or cranberry based stuffing.

  • Is there such thing as a mandatory at Thansgiving ?
    But here are some ideas;

  • I dont know….maybe google some menu …i would say- nice and friendly atmosphere is what we all need

  • My family and I where in Boston Massachusetts last year for thanksgiving and we loved it.

I will definitely be hosting a thanksgiving day dinner in my Melbourne home.

I hope you and your family have a lovely dinner.

I recommend going on a website I did post the link on the post that was on Facebook

  • Why do a Thanksgiving meal as you live in Australia and as your asking I presume your never been to America. You could name it something else and put your own ideas to be different, still have roast turkey and pumpkin pie.
