Hello!

My bub is 12 months and I recently weaned her off night feeds and she pretty much consistently sleeps through until 4am. But I just can’t get past this 4am waking – it’s like clock-work! If I feed her she generally goes back to sleep until around 7am, but ideally I’d love her to skip this feed. Any tips?

  • I think you just have to persist for awhile, don’t give the feed and eventually they will go without it.

  • A later bedtime would be a good start. Gradually make it later over time, so the body clock adjusts

  • Try a later bedtime. Work up gradually.

  • Have you tried offering water instead. That’s what we did. There was a little bit of protesting but it didn’t take long for my daughter to realise that was all that was on offer. No point waking for it.unless she was actually thirsty

  • My son did 4am wake ups and because I wouldn’t feed him cause I didn’t want him use to that time he kept waking. Only he wouldn’t go back to sleep till 6am.. In the end it would have been easier to just feed him. He grew out of it after about a year.

  • With my two of my three three kids when they started this routine, i had to sit there in a chair with them not happy with me just hugging them for unhappy for up to an hour. I did this for up to two weeks on the nights i knew they had not had much to drink during the day i offerend them sligtly warmed water. Once they worked out their hissy fits wasnt going to work they soon stopped waking up at thoose hours unless they were ill. it took a lot of strength not to give in. With my first i gave into him till he was 24 months and he still at 6 has sleep issues. I do wonder if it was if i gave into him as a bubs.

  • My daughter went through this stage. They grow out of it – especially as winter hits and they feel all snug and warm in the bed. Eventually it becomes later and later.

My son is 5:30am clock-work (he’s 12 months now). I take him in the bed and give him a bottle next to me so I can usually snatch another hour before my daughter wakes us all up. Then he has a nap around 8:30 for an hour.
