Hello!

My husband and I bought a house that needs a bit of reno before we move in with our two little girls under the age of 3. Need some advise on how to manage renovations, stress relieve and making our kids happy at the same time without making our marriage fall apart in all the stress

  • I see this is an old question. How did it all work out ?

  • Wow, what a trying time. When it all becomes too much, just remind yourself of how lucky you are to have your own home and the money to renovate it. So many people are stuck in the rent rut, others are on the street, sometimes thinking of those doing it tougher then you, helps put life in perspective

  • Sometimes staying with other family members while doing renovations can prevent breathing in dust etc.

  • Renovations can be so stressful. Hope your renovations went well.

  • That’s exciting – keep us posted on how you go and what things you found worked for you!

  • Thanks everyone with your great and helpful comments which I have taken on board and help me to start this renovations.I have gotten over the fear and am fully focussed now has a propject manager

  • organise! get those reno’s done on the things that need it first.

  • I think its great that you are hopfully planning on doing the renavations before you move into the house. If you can afford it along with the costs of where you are living currently. If your hubby has the option to take days off during the week and the kids go into daycare while he or you also works the weekends so they will not be under your feet, if you are planning on doing a lot of the work yourself. Goodluck i hope it all works out for you.

  • Get everyone involved as much as possible, as often as possible. Creating something new together builds relationships. Don’t hang back & worry… energy is everything & having everyone working together is a wonderful experience.

  • Plan, plan, plan. Try to list all the major steps required and set out timelines and budgets. I find this helps to set expectations and lets you keep track of what is going on.

  • Are you project managing, doing the work or having the job project managed? If you are in your own home during the renovations, that helps – living with friends and family amplifies the stress. Doing it all yourself really is hard. If you are project managing, make sure you really are doing so, and not being led by individual contractors. Depending on the size, using a professional architect or builder to run the project for you really helps. I would also suggest having a plan and a budget worked out prior to the commencement of the project, without this you are very open to confusion, conflict and problems. Good luck!
