Hello!

We try and save on electricity and watch our usage, but our bills just keep getting higher and higher. I would love any advice or tips on saving electricity. Thanks.

  • Charge phones, tablets and laptops at work.

  • Winter is a terrible time for our electricity bills. Try switching off technology at the powerpoint, switching off lights that aren’t being used, replacing light bulbs with energy efficient varieties, minimising heating by wearing more clothes and sealing doors/windows.

  • prices are increasing dramatically – unfortunately. however look at ways you can turn things off while your not using them, use power saving measures on appliances and see if there is anything in the house that may be chewing the power.

  • I think all electricity costs have gone through the roof.
Our power bill tripled & NOTHING in our house hold has changed!
We turn off & unplug all unused power points because even though you switch it off power does still run through it apparently. We also use energy saver light globes.
If you are not renting perhaps look into some solar panels? I have heard they are wonderful & drop electricity costs dramatically!
With the warmer weather coming it is going to be difficult to keep homes cool without using air con which will cause electricity costs to sky rocket again.
Call your provider & ask them to let you know what is using the most electricity in your home. Also check the energy rating on your electricals.
    Good luck!

  • Keep your heater set at a certain temp, put a jumper on, don’t have electric blankets, don’t have a clothes drier, get energy saving LED light bulbs, don’t use the oven unless you’re cooking more then one item, don’t turn lights on if you’re not needing it, hang thick curtains (keeps heat in for winter and heat out for summer

  • I’m reading these comments!!! We’re the same. Just installed LED light bulbs, but our light and residential part of the bill went up $9. Up and up and up, even though it’s always just the 2 of us and no difference in our power consumption

  • We turn everything off at the power point. Only have lights on in the room everyone is in, only tv in our house and noticed a big difference. Not putting heaters on over night, or really during the day. We only put it on of a morning to take the chill off. Also helps to get high energy rating appliances like fridges and washing machines.

  • Ours are high too. We have recently gotten rid of a fish tank and turned off a fridge out the back to see if that makes a difference.

  • Yes it seems to be higher instead of lower, turn lights off after walking from a room, cold water is great for washing, invest in a gorgeous throw for the lounge to keep heating lower,a lamp or candles instead of two or three lights.Best of luck!

  • You can actually get a meter device that will tell you how much electricity you are using and that way you will be able to pin point what is causing the high electricity usage.

  • We use aircon only couple of hours a day in the warm season. We also try to use the microwave as less as we can.

  • Always turn power points off like the washing machine I never use to. Think this is helping my bills because they have been lower

  • Hi. We just installed an air pump hot water system thats digital. This means we can time when it turns on and off. We set it to turn on at 4am and back off at 9pm since everyone has had baths or showers by then. Our next bill will tell us exactly how much we’ve saved. Our last bill we only had the hot water system for about a month from the quarterly bill and saved around $150. We also have a dishwasher that we load and set the timer for 10pm. 10pm-5am is non peak time for electricty so anything you can put a timer on is good to utilise. We turn all power points off at the wall when not in use apart from computer. Replace any old power boards as we found one that was costing us 40c per hour and nothing was turned on that was plugged into it. Teach the kids and big kids at heart, natural light is better than a light switch.

  • 1. Install the solar panel. Get the good quality ones.
    2. Turn off anything you don’t use at the wall.

I installed a 1.5kw solar panel 5 years ago and I have never paid a cent since.

  • solar panels, I turn computer and home theatre off at the wall if not going to be used for a long time. don’t set air con too low. led lights
