Hello!

I’m travelling overseas  soon (20+ hour flight with breaks) with my precious and very active 11 month old. Any advice for an anxious mum? Thanks

  • I hope it all went well for you and your baby.

  • All kids are active and lots of people travel with kids and have no issues, so de stress right away. They can pick up on your stress and make things worse

  • The most important is to make sure you sleep well before the flight to have all your energy, you will need it!
Take with you some activities for your little one, like books, colouring, favourite toy, iPad…I also made a separate bag with lots of snacks and treats.
Don’t forget to take clothes change for your little one and for you.
Good luck and have a great trip.

  • I travel recently with my 10month to Bali and I researched a few site regarding travelling with kids and I followed a few tips where they say take reading book 7 toyss and different book 7 toys for each hour, ipad for babies programmes which you can download.Keep to your home routine whilst on the plane especially sleep routine. If they become restless then walk down the ale with them.Goodluck and enjoy your trip

  • If they enjoy movies or kids shows for songs etc, you can purchase dvds of it. you could borrow a portable dvd player as well so you can keep the laptop to yourself if you have one. =)

  • Baby carrier is a must and then plenty of stickers! If allowed, a few balloons to blow up at various time with something to tide them up! The seat buckle might be the best toy of all though!

  • Ear plugs for the rest of the passengers, lol. Just take snack,s new toys, special toy or blanket and a vodka for yourself. You will be fine, thousands do it everyday.

  • call the airline and ask them for suggestions that will not bother them or other passengers. I would also let the cabin staff know that bub is an active child and that you would appreciate a place if possible for bub to move around without disturbing other passengers or the crew. They may give you a few suggestions. If bub was older i would suggest that you take special quiet books, crayons etc just for the flight and also make certain that you have loads of card games etc to play with them as they will only see sky out of the windows so i spy is not viable. I would call the airline and mention their favourite foods too as there is nothing worse than a hungry child who won’t eat the airline food.

  • Make sure that you have alerted the airlines that you will be traveling with and request a bassinet seat or if you can afford it buy another seat. I found the bassinet was wonderful.
Just be aware that you might have issues trying to eat a meal on the plane especially if you dont have a bassinet or if your child is being clingy.
When you get on the plane just mention to as many staff as possible that its your first flight with your child and you are a bit nervous with how you will cope. If you let them know then they are usually pretty good and will offer you as much assistance as possible.
Buy some new toys (ones that dont make noise so you dont annoy others) and only give the new toys to your child when they are becoming really restless.
Between flights do all you can to wear your bub out.
    Good luck.

  • Great question, we’re in the same position with 1 year old twins so will be following this post for some tips! Only thing others have told me is Phenergan but I don’t like the idea of drugging our babies at all, plus Phenergan is only for ages 2+. Ours love books and have just started to draw (well, they’re connecting the pen to the mega-sketch) so hopefully we can keep them entertained for a bit and get them to sleep for some of it!
