Hello!

My 7 week old grandson will not sleep on his back. We are totally aware of all the SIDS warnings etc and are just wondering what other mums of tummy sleepers did to change the way your baby sleeps. Thanks

  • Try putting him on his side. When my son was a tiny baby, this was the recommended position

  • You can get a sleep positioner where the baby gets wedged between two hard cushions but again these aren’t recommended under sids guidelines. I got a respiratory monitor which gives me peace of mind

  • Both of my children liked to sleep on their tummies and I always tried to get them to sleep on their backs, I found wrapping my daughter helped her a lot, especially when she was swaddled with her hands up!

  • has this changed at all?

  • i have 3 out of 4 that are tummy sleepers and my 4th that was happy to sleep on her back i got told to put her on her tummy as she suffered apnia and this helped her so i wouldn’t be overly concerned and at 7 weeks they can lift there head on there own if they need too

  • Previously my girl was also a tummy sleeper.i used to feel same fear about SIDS.later I found when she sleeps on her tummy it’s easy for her to breath.so I let her sleep in a slanting position.she changed.body pillow is also there which prevents baby from turning to both sides.it is available in eBay.

  • My son did it too but it change when his is toddler. It should be ok.

  • I wouldn’t stress about it. The rules keep changing. You could try a wedge, but you might find that the baby just ends up under the wedge. Mine were all tummy sleepers and they survived.

  • I had 3 children survive in different sleep positions without the need for monitors because I had them in the room next to me. I would probably ‘wedge’ the baby on it’s side so that it is free to vomit or cough.

  • I would put him down and swaddle him to try and stop him from turning

  • There are sleep corrector pillows that help, but then the same could be said about those and not having them in the cot because of SIDS.I monitored my baby very closely to see what he did until I felt comfortable to leave the room, most babies will turn their heads to one side. Make sure you keep an eye on them or the baby monitor if you do decide to let them be on their tummies.

  • I think you can buy a thing like a seat belt that holds them on their back made out of material. You can also get alarms that monitor their breathing that go off if they stop. I can’t remember when mine started rolling on their tummies in their sleep but mine too liked to sleep on their tummy. Make sure they can’t cover themselves with blankets and maybe but them in a baby sleeper bag.

  • Its so funny but the rules for sleep positions have changed over the years.
With my eldest we were told to have them sleeping on their sides and never on their backs.
One child im not sure if it was #2 or #3 we were told to have them on their tummies and the other one we were told on their backs.
    *total confusion*

  • if thats how he is comfortable them let him do it just check regularly and maybe invest in a sound and movement monitor just to be safe

  • You can buy the angel care sleep monitors that detect them breathing. Most baby shops stock them now I think.
