Hello!

I have 3 year old twins and the mozzies have had a field day. Just after suggestions on how to stop them itching please?

  • When I babysat children one of them was highly allergic to mozzie bites. I had a bottle of stingose on the bench ready. Somebody suggested making dispirin into a paste and putting some on the bites. It might sting for a minute or so because the skin is broken but it won’t itch afterwards.

  • ORDINARY VINEGAR DABBED ON BITE HAS BEEN FOR ME (AS ADULT THAT GETS BITTEN PROFFUSLY) THE BEST WAY TO EASE ITCHING. hOPE THIS HELPS AS BITES ARE AWFUL AND KIDS (EVEN ADULTS)WANT TO SCRATCH THEM.

  • Dress your children in light coloured clothes and where practical long sleeves.
You can buy special bangles that contain citronella. The warmth of your skin releases a very low aroma of citronella which mosquitoes hate the smell of.
Alternatively you could use a personal pest repellant with active ingredients to do the job but not have a strong “fragrance” and other chemicals to hold the aroma in. I have been advised of 2 products that I intend to try myself when I go to a tropical climate. One is called “off” and the other one is “Bushman’s”. You may need to check whether they are suitable for children your age. Tere are pleny of others around but I find some of them give me a headache. To treat the bites themselves, we found Stingose is one of the best products. It somes in a small bottle and you spray a little onto the bite itself. One of ours is highly allergic to mosquitoes. He went outside without us hearing him and got a nasty mosquito bite near his eye. It swelled so quickly we thought it was a spider bite and took him to hospital. He was treated for it and had to stay home from kindy for a couple of days because his eye closed completely.

  • The only thing I could do for my youngest was give her phenergan, as advised by a GP. She’s allergic to them though, the bites swell and go very red. Once she was bitten near her eye and her eyelid swelled so much she couldn’t see from her eye and it looked like she’d been whacked in the face! Very scary.

  • two of my three kids need cream prescribed from the doctor to help them…

  • Aloe Vera plant – break off a leaf, open it, and rub the gel on the bites. the kids can do it themselves, it is non toxic. It really really works, for midgie bites and sun burn too

  • My son used to wake up with mickey muse ears as his ears are sensitive and I always knew he was bitten by the good old mozzie during summer time. I bought one of those Mortein Mozzie zappers ( that was one sale one day , plugged it in and then no more bites after that. Kids skin are very sensitive and mozzies love them .

  • I agree with the others, it seems to work. Before we tried Calamine lotion, but it didn’t help for long.

  • Vinegar works a treat for stopping the itch

  • Toothpaste works well for myself and my daughter.

  • I agree with the pinetarsal. Works wonders for an itch.

  • You can use pinetarsal in the bath – although it has a strong smell. As oatmeal bended and added to the bath (put it is old pantyhose so you don’t have to dig it out).

  • My sisters says mozzie repellant on the bites stops the itch – I’m not so sure about this though. We use kids Zyrtec for 2 days and by this time the itch has calmed a lot. Topical creams are ok, but need constant top up. Calamine lotion is probably the best cream.
