Hello!

We are looking to try for another child. Our youngest is under 1 and still breastfeeds often. Was anyone here pregnant and breastfeeding? Did this cause any issues for either baby or for yourselves?

  • Gosh no, not me. It was three years between babies for me. You would need to keep on a nutritionally full diet to cope with the demands of doing both.

  • Breastfeeding whilst pregnant would make huge demands on your body. To remain healthy and maintain a healthy milk supply, I suggest you eat well and get lots of rest. You’re not pregnant yet so it may end up you’ll no longer be breast feeding when you actually fall pregnant

  • I fell pregnant with both babies number 2 & 3 whilst breastfeeding. No issues at all, had massive milk supplies at birth. I tandem fed babies 1 & 2 for a year then weaned my first bub. Weaned my second a month before 3rd bub born, milk stayed. Been breastfeeding for 7.5 years straight now – all of my kids were extended breastfed. Kinda looking forward to getting my body back haha!

  • Yes there is a chance to get pregnant during breastfeed

  • I know a Mum who got pregnant within 8 weeks each baby she had. She had 4 in just over 3 years. I don’t know how long she breastfed each baby.

  • No issues :) if anything it helped to wean

  • I have friends who breastfed while pregnant. In the last month of pregnancy the milk changes and the taste will be different and seems like most toddlers will wean themselves off immediately when the milk changes.

  • Not me personally, but I know someone who fell pregnant twice while breastfeeding. It didn’t cause any issues to her or the children, apart from the fact she wasn’t ready for another babe quite so soon. ^_^;
    You may find if your fall pregnant your hormones change the flavour of your milk or dry it up a bit, and you may find your breasts get sore. That may affect how you feel about being touched. But otherwise there shouldn’t be any other issues.

  • Not me personally but a friend did. She was able to fall pregnant easily. She said that she did have some dips in her supply but overall no issues and then continued to tandem feed

  • No, but this is reasonably common, so I imagine it’s ok. Maybe check with your doctor.

  • When you breastfeed exclusively and Your baby is less then 6months old, Your menstrual periods have not yet returned and Your baby is breastfeeding on cue (both day & night), and gets nothing but breastmilk or only token amounts of other foods, then breastfeeding can have a contraceptive effect.

  • I fell pregnant while breastfeeding, as soon as my periods came back which was in between 9-14 months. I fell pregnant and didn’t cause any issues what so ever. I stopped breastfeeding about 2 months before the next one came.
