Hello!

My baby will turn 1 next month. I read conflicting information on WHY to wean at one year. However, I would like advice on HOW to wean from bottle to cup.

  • Ours still asks for a bottle but what he really wants is formula. He knows there is still part of a tin in the cupboard. He likes it in a spill proof drink container. He isn’t interested in the sippy cups with handles. He knows he has to hold it in both hands.

  • I weaned each of my three kids at their 12 month birthday. I simply took the bottles away, replaced with a sippy cup of milk at each meal and it was fine. None of them looked for their bottles or were distressed about it. At first it seemed like they weren’t drinking much. But that increased over time. It actually encouraged them to eat more food at meal times. I also had water at snack times and had it available all day. I did this for my own reasons (and from advice from child health) and had no problems. Lots of other mums I know we’re inclined to hold onto the bottles as long as they could. Each to their own. If you want to wean soon, now is the time to instroduce the sippy cup of water as much as you can, leave them in several places all around your home. Good luck.
