Hello!

I’m heading towards 50 and wondering what age others went through menopause? I’m still fertile, no hot flushes. I don’t really know what to expect, can anyone explain?

  • I was fifty, and I’ve had a pretty easy time of it. One day my periods just stopped, like a switch had been flipped. I’ve had some mild hot flushes, and that’s it.

  • I think I was 44 or 45 or so when the meno party started ;)

  • I’ve not had a period for over twelve months. The hot flushes are by far the worst symptom and still happening

  • I’m nearly 50 and have been wondering the same thing. Apparently when you start menopause can be genetically linked. I have no idea when my mum started menopause, but I know she was still having periods when she was in her early 50s. So I could have a few years grace yet. I read of one woman on MoMs who had been going through menopause for 20 years! I had no idea it could drag out for so long :(

  • Thanks for honest information ,my Mum isn’t one for talking about this ,but I’m going to be ipso with my girls .

  • I think your family history could give you an indication on when it might happen. I’m only 42 but it is something that’s crossed my mind as it can happy early. I need to ask my Mum to get an indication of when it might happen.

I agree with the other Mums – go with the flow.

  • I’m 46 and peri-menopause has hit. Very heavy periods longer and less regular than before (oh joy!), hot and itchy at night, and pretty much feels like I have PMT most of the month. My Mum was 50 when she went through menopause.

  • Everyone is different and menopause can occur with some women at the age of 40 but the average age is 45-55. The most important thing to do is NOT TO WORRY about it and carry on with a happy healthy life style.
I am 60 in September and have really never been that troubled by any symptoms of menopause, I just went with the flow and soon found it was all over.
But some women do suffer, so my advice is to seek out help when experiencing hard to handle symptoms but till they or if they arrive, stop stressing. Also a word of warning about conception, be careful when approaching menopause as your periods can be all over the place, I have a friend who has a brother the same age as her daughter, her mom had a change of life baby (that’s what it was called back then).
Good wishes for a fun and symptom free change.

  • Menstruation and menopause sure can be tough!

  • It’s a confusing issue for me ,I’m 48 & irregular cycles ,been clamped so not fertile.Hoping menopause starts soon so over monthly body issues .

  • It varies for everybody – some women when they are younger than 50 and some when they are older. Some women experience menopause with very little symptoms and some do suffer. It is not something I have experienced.

  • On average the sooner you menstruated the older before menopause. The change is affected by your age at last pregnancy, family history (ask your mom), hormone levels and daily stress. The average age is 50-55 but can come later or set off early by a stressful lifestyle. Some women have been as young as 30.

  • I had a hysterectomy at 45 & so did my Mum so my sister never had a family guideline of what age to expect menopause. Surprisingly she failed to have a regular period at 50 & her hot flushes eased fairly quickly without the need of medication. Some are lucky.

  • Thanks for posting because I am interested to know too

  • Still havent gone through menopause myself and i would be intrested to hear what age range people go through it. My mum had a hysterectomy at 40. (the age i am now ) So i cannot use her as a guide to see what age it might happen for me. I gather the hot flushes can go on for years once they start though.
