Hello!

I am still breast feeding my 8 month old bub, but all my friends stopped breastfeeding much earlier. When do most mums stop breastfeeding?

  • There is no right or wrong. You can breastfeed as long as you yourself and your child want to breastfeed. I breastfed my son till he was 5yrs old. At that age it was just 1 breastfeed before bed.

  • I believe most mums stop at around six months, but there’s nothing wrong with going for longer if you can.

  • I breastfed my daughter till 1 year and 1 week old.

  • I fed until a year old.

  • Its suggested (as long as there’s no issues) that you breastfeed at least till 12 months but preferably up till 2 years. I stopped at 12 months for my own reasons but would personally not have chosen to stop any earlier..

  • It is totally up to you and bubba when you are ready to wean but WHO recomends 2 years if you can make it that far, I’m still going 13 months later , don’t stress about what other people do everybody is different, do whatever you think is right but if you stop before 12 months they will need formula as a replacement

  • My first I breastfed until she was just over 3. I stopped because she was biting me. My second is nearly 16 months and is still breastfeeding. Will stop when she is ready unless she is a biter too.

  • 1. At 4 months (due to not enough milk supply)
    2. 1-1/2 years old
    3. 2-1/2 years old

  • How long you BF is dependent on you and your baby. Mine were BF for different times either due to running out of milk, not wanting to feed. The big one was biting me and drawing blood. Had put up with the nibbles but when I saw blood coming out of his mouth he was done, he was about 13 months old. The shortest was 6 months, was feeding bub before taking him to be weighted so finally fessed up and had to put him on a cup. This was a baby who hated bottles and any type of formula, so was given a recipe by health nurses for hi,/
If you feel comfortable BF then do so, do it until bub is ready or it is interfering with life. Not like a friend of mine who stopped only because her daughter started pre-school. Sorry for me that was a bit long but if it works for you then go ahead.

  • 9.5 months with my first, 6 months with my second, and 17 months with my third (was so hard to wean her).

  • I stopped at 13 months with my first and 7 months with my second. With the second I had to stop due to an impending operation.

  • As mentioned it’s completely up to you. Both my kids stopped at about 14 months but I found it was mostly because my milk had slowed so much they were too frustrated trying to feed with very little result. They very quickly learnt to take a bottle. If I had the milk and bub was willing I would have kept going but you need to adapt to the circumstances

  • It’s a personal choice so don’t feel pressured to stop until you and/or bub are ready. I stopped after about a year with first, 8 months with second and 1 year with third

  • I kept feeding my 1st until 16 months – gradually cut down, last feed she was having was bedtime. I’m still feeding my second who just turned 1. She’s still having about 4 feeds in 24hrs. I think as long as it is working for you and bub, keep going. Especially through the winter with flu season. Even if it’s just one feed a day it’s a great opportunity to connect with your bub. Don’t feel pressured by anyone else to do something you don’t want to do.

  • Depend on your circumstances or choice. I intend to breast feed until I go to work when bub is nearly 1. Hopefully I can do it for that long. My sister stopped when my nephew was 6 months as he had teeth and bit her so hard that it drew blood. The longest my mum breast fed was 4 months due to her milk drying up. It’s really up to you.
