Hello!

My 6 year old daughter is wanting either a lap top or tablet for Christmas/Birthday and was wondering is she too young to have one of her own? Or would it be good for her?

  • I held off until she needed one for school – so she 5

  • We gave our kids for the first time their own tablets a couple of years ago.
My eldest was 11yr and got my old phone (without sim), my son and other daughter were 10yr and 6yr back then, they got both a simple $100 Lenovo tablet.
However we gave our youngest deliberately an expensive iPad at a very young age (think she was just 2yr) as she has Down Syndrome and it would be good for her fine motor skills and also for language programs to help her express herself. We got her iPad via the back then BetterStart funding (now NDIS).

  • I think yes,it can improve her skills and learn so much!

  • I think she’s a little too young. I would wait till she’s in Years 5 or 6 at primary.

  • I think it is not good to let our child to spend too much time on this but it is import they have one. My 2.5 yo has her own iPad and sometimes it is scary to see her doing things I don’t know how to do it. I heard that schools are requiring that each child need to have their iPad. That is the technology. If is good I am not sure.

  • Maybe ask a teacher so in her case the school she goes to as these days technology is so advanced she may benefit from using one . Check to see what other kids are doing too if you can .

  • well i will be getting one for my daughter but it is because she needs it for school. they do special laptop classes and she will be able to do a lot of her school work on it. they get to bring it home every day! so my point is that you will most likely have to buy one for her for school in a year or so anyway. it has to be ordered through the school because they need certain ones with certain programming put on for their school work.

  • Goodness , kids want more and they start young . I bet it must be a friend or relative that she knows have one and it is hard to give a reason for NO . My nephew is 4 and had an Ipad ( started as a toy one )I think since 2 or 3 so it wont get better .

  • Maybe she can share ours until she is old enough to learn to look after one of her own

  • Oh gosh, that is young fir such an expensive gift. Having said that, I have seen a list on here asking MoMs to recommend a good one for a 1 year old :/

  • I personally, think its too young. We bought a family tablet as we thought it wasn’t right for her to have her own. This helps keep pressure off us being hassled for technological devices they may want in future and also helps monitor/reduce screen time. We also figured young kids don’t have the money for apps and other downloads, and as such we preferred the idea of a family device. Good luck though as the peer pressure around this topic is significant…
