Hello!

My son cant stand some textures, he will gag at banana, wont touch slimy fruit, but will lick rock melon. Any tips to help him eat more fruit?

  • Smoothie, fruit salad and try modeling the behaviour in front of him. Some kids (and adults!) are particularly sensitive to texture so just focus on what he likes and occasionaly introduce new things he might like but try to be relaxed about it

  • Have you tried putting it in a smoothie? I can get my kids to eat/drink pretty much anything in a smoothie…even spinach ( I know that’s not a fruit but hey)

  • I let the kids help. They help to pick the fruit at the shops, and then help me cut it up and serve it on a platter. That way they get excited about it, and feel like they have made it.
    Also, sometimes I bribe! :)

  • He always helps with food prep and choosing his fruit.
We have had a break thru.. its not much but he nibbled and ate a small peice of honeydew melon… fingers xd he continues.

When he was younger he used to love fruit.. eat it all the time, from brekkie to dinner..

  • If he’s got to eat fruit at school and is reluctant perhaps Get him involved… choosing, buying (anything including unusual fruits), chopping, packing in lunch box etc.

  • Lucky my kids always loved fruit. Maybe make a fruit salad , add some yoghurt , make smoothies , mash up the banana in a sandwich . I was always careful of hard fruits such as apples and pears so maybe dice them up to make it easier to eat.

  • Hes ok with that type of stuff sometimes… its just fruit in general that he wont eat. Just makes me go nuts cos hell have school and just sit there…. it be a long time from brekkie to lunch. At school they can only have fresh fruit or veg. And he wont eat raw veg only mash with all vegies in it… but cant take that either iv asked so i can be prepared…… ????

  • A good way is to hide the fruit in other foods, muffins, cakes, smoothies, ice cream and icy poles. The recipes can be low in sugar as the fruit will be in them. Might be worth a try?

  • Iv been trying since last year…. his dietican has no ideas as to what else to do. At school he has a peice of fruit in his fruit box and a fork so he doesnt have to touch. But it doesnt get eaten.
    Thanks heaps for your suggestions

  • Make the fruit visually fun. Cut watermelon into shapes, make banana boats with a cherry on the sail ( he still might not like this one) , make sure he sees you eating fruit and keep trying!

  • For slimey fruit, try putting bits on skewers. That way he doesn’t have to touch them. I once read that it takes a couple of goes of offering new foods to kids before they like them. So just keep trying
