  • Initially… bribery!!

  • I have often a read with my kids in our bed, after which they go into their own bed. We have the rule ‘when you don’t go to your bed when I say (or come out of bed), you don’t come in my room to re ad the next day’. They make their choice and it helps them to make the right choice :)

  • we tell our daughter back to bed, she will usually come out once for something but if she comes out for no reason we rouse at her and send her back if she keeps it up we walk her back to bed and rouse at her again and warn if she comes out again for no reason she will be smacked.
having a water bottle in the room is good to stop them coming out for a drink.

  • I threatened my kids with closing the door if they didn’t stay in bed. They didn’t like that idea so they stayed in bed.

  • We used to have a child door gate at on oldest sons door as he kept getting up and once they both was in a bed we used to find them in bed together so we ended up putting them in same room and used a tick chart and Friday night who ever had the most tick picked the movie for the night.

  • Sit in the room with them and read a story. suggest that if they stay you will read otherwise you won’t read. Get them to pick the story.
Once you have finished reading sit in the room while they lay there and slowly make your way out once you know they are asleep (Check Supernanny episodes/website0

  • Looks like The Nanny has this covered. Talk to the child and tell them in a low tone that it’s bedtime, read them one story and then it’s lights out. If they get out of bed you tell them it’s bedtime and walk them back to bed, as many times as it takes. It might get ugly for a night or two but you must not give in. No yelling and screaming just take the child and put them to bed and say good night. I babysit children and I tell them 30 minutes before they have to go to bed. I like make them a small glass of warm milk and read one story and it’s off to bed. Kids like to be told what the rules are. If you have the TV on keep it very low as to not entice them to listen. I have been known to turn off all the lights except for a table lamp in the lounge room and tell kids I am off to bed soon too. Best of luck!

  • Depends on the age. My youngest is 2 and if she keeps getting up I go in the first time give her a hug and kiss a softly say to her it is bed time, I love you. If she gets out again I just keep putting her back but don’t talk to her. I also make her walk back and climb in her own bed. Eventually they wear themselves out and after a few times they soon realise they won’t get away with it lol. If they are older I’d be very stern and tell them it is bed time and that’s it. If they are old enough start introducing natural consequences. They will learn

  • As in previous post if they get out take them back each time

  • Sit outside their door and quietly walk them back to bed every time they get up. They soon get the message. Remember not to get mad just stay calm and in control…on the outside at least.

  • It depends on their age. Sit them down, have a ‘meeting’ and explain that from now on they wont be getting out of bed. If they get up they will be put straight back to bed with no words spoken to them, no smacks, no discussion, minimal eye contact…just put straight back to bed. If you have to put them back 50 times then just do it, they will probably test you but even if it takes 4 nights it will finally be done with and you can have peace.

  • I use the nanny method which is simply wait for them to come out dont talk to them put them back into bed, repeat 50 times for the next 3 nights and all sorted :) worked for me.
