Hello!

My mum is going through menopause and often she gets high blood pressure (managed with medication) and lethargy. She does not want to take Hormone Replacement Therapy. Any suggestions to battle this or just let it run its course?

  • This may sound weird, but maybe your mum could try drinking a glass of soy milk each day. Soy helps me with my hormones.

  • I just put up with it, and didn’t even consult a doctor.

  • I’ve been peri menopausal for a few years, (41 years old ) and really it’s going to depend on what she’s experiencing. My blood pressure is fine, and I get the occasional (once or twice a month) hot flushes during the day which is no big deal but the night sweats…. Upwards of 5 nights a week year round. It sucks the big one. I swear I feel permanently dehydrated and completely blah most mornings.

But I haven’t killed anyone yet and it’ll stop eventually right????

Bamboo clothing is my recommendation for the hot flushes/ sweaty ladies… Awesome fabric for wicking away the sweat but it does need to be replaced every year or so if it’s being washed at high rotation like mine.

  • My doctor wouldn’t give me anything for menopause. Said there was nothing that helps. LOL l didn’t go back to here but am going to see what the next doctors says.

  • I’d definitely look at taking your Mum to see a good Naturopath. Ask around and get recommendations if you can, as some are good and some not-so-good. You can always contact the Australian Register of Naturopaths and Herbalists (http://www.aronah.org/contact-us/) and ask for their recommendations of any of their members who specialize in treatment of menopause. Good luck!

  • A friend of mine managed with a natural remedy that was suggested by her GP. Am not sure what it is called but something I would think that needs to be discussed with the GP

  • At 45 and with two teens and 3 year old I’m going through early menopause so I will be reading for advice myself!

  • Have you thought of going to see a naturopath if she doesn’t want to go on HRT

  • Oh dear I hope you get the answers and it all happens quickly for your Mum. It will all happen to us one day.

  • I personally would talk to your G.P about it and what can help her. I know my girl friend is on hrt and also some thing else from her doctor…can’t remember the other thing.
She needs to see her gp to get put on some thing to help her

  • she doesnt like the h.r.t because it increases risk for hormone related cancer.

  • It is harder for some than others, if she is suffering i would suggest the tablets, why so no if they will help.

  • You could try a nutritionalist, they may be able to help with diet changes to combat symptoms.

  • I also am going through menopause so many symptoms you really dont know what to do for the best I am not on any medication as my GP seems to think I do not need anything anyway if you are not happy I would be getting a second opinion good luck

  • We are all different and different things work for different people; your mum might have her own beliefs on Hormone replacement therapy. Just be the best possible support and best friend you can be. A second opinion from another doctor might be advisable and yes I agree with the comment about talking to pharmacist they are often as good as a doctor with free advice. Good luck I hope she is feeling fine and you are both having a great day.
