I am hoping to make up some bean bags for my children, and wanted to know if it is a good idea to use rice (which we have heaps of at home). Did anyone who has done this have any troubles down the line, and did you do anything to the rice first (bake it, soak in vinegar etc)? Otherwise, what fillings would you recommend (preferably inexpensive/readily available ones). Thanks!

  • If it’s large bean bags that people sit on, you can buy Styrofoam beads from places like K Mart, Big W etc.

  • Buy a bag of beans from kmart

  • Regular dry rice works well. Just make the beanbags small enough not to cause injury if someone is hit in the head.

  • Rice works really well, I have used it

  • I thought you meant bean bags kids sit on. I was thinking that would be one heck of a lot of rice! I have not heard of little bean bags kids play with! lol!! I do know however if you have to fill or refill a large bean bag do it in a dry empty bath! The poly beads go everywhere! lol!!!

  • Also; I have used sand and dried beans; they work well too.

  • Rice is perfect for little bean bags.

  • You could put the rice in a ballon before covering it (a bit like the stress balls people make out of balloons and rice).

  • I used sand. I put it in plastic bags before sewing it into the cover. Wheat & rice work well, you just have to make sure that they don’t get wet.

  • I’ve seen people use old cushions and fabric off cuts to fill beans bags

  • I though you meant bean bags for sitting on and thought rice would be too heavy. and lots and lots of rice. For those small bags, it would be perfect.

  • rice, wheat or corn kernels (like popping corn just not popped of course) – no treating required

  • Rice works really well or if you have lots of it I use wheat

  • I’d use rice, wheat or even dried beans. I don’t think you’d need to do anything to them first. What a great idea. They are quite expensive to buy!

  • Yes rice would be best and no need to do anything to it
