Hello!

I’m trying to introduce solids to my 8 mo but she is getting constipated! I’m just wondering what some good foods are that I can give her to make her regular. I started solids at 4 months and I make her potato and sweet potato and corn and broccoli and she loves it but won’t eat much of it at all and has never really eaten jar or tin food she just doesnt seem interested! I feel that it’s really important that she eats more as she is still drinking 7 to 8 bottles a day and waking up twice during the night for bottles. Please help. Thanks.

  • Good food choices for babies with constipation include:

    skinless apples.
    broccoli.
whole grains, such as oatmeal or whole-grain bread or pasta.
    peaches.
    pears.
    plums.
    papaya.
    kiwi.

  • Pumpkin, pear and prune juice all help

  • Give Kiwi fruit a try.

  • I think lots of water and pear juice is good.

  • Just like adults, kids need plenty of fluids and fruits and vegetables to keep their bowels healthy . Do they like bananas ? My kids loved them and I use to give them first thing in the morning with their cereals. You can even add strawberries, kiwi fruits etc. It is also colourful and makes eating more interesting . At dinner, give them lots of vegies. like beans , carrots, broccoli, peas etc, but make them tender so chewing is easier for them too .

  • fluid is important – for constipation ask your GP. My son was about nine months before he really ate much…. good luck

  • 8 months old and having how many bottles a day? That’s too many for a baby that age. Cut back her bottles and she’ll be wanting to eat more solids. Pumpkin purée, straight pumpkin no added sugar or salt, is good for helping to keep them regular

  • A friend said potato can constipate them. Plenty of water is essential. Pear juice (watered down) prune pureed can help. I was also told bananas can constipate them.

  • Try little brown sugar with warm water. Couple sips.
    Dried apricot snacks

  • The purple rather than yellow Rafferty’s rice cereal is apparently better if they’re constipated. I use pear to keep Bub regular… I just buy tins when I think he needs more. Yes home cooked is good but jars are good too:) I’ve heard banana can help or hinder depending on the child. I hope you figure out the triggers!

  • Banana is the best for my kid.

  • My little one was pushing really hard to do #2 so I started mixing some pureed prunes with his apple / pear and he a) loved it and b) it helped move things along a little easier.

  • as others have suggested, i would cook up some apples and pears and mix it well with oats and formula. my kids loved this

  • Try rice cereal mixed with her formula to start with. Then introduce her to mashed fruit. Pears and kiwi helped my babies when they were constipated. They wont need too much. I always found the fruit was the easiest taste for them to enjoy.

  • Try cook some apple and pear slices together with a few prunes in a saucepan before mashing it into lumpy or smooth consistency. It’s yummy and will help reduce constipation.
