Hello!

My mum has put the fear of cooking/freezing into me with an email this morning. She was reminding me to check the thermostat on my fridge and freezer regularly. She wrote “How cold is your fridge? And how cold does the freezer get? You know it has to be at least minus 15 in order to keep commercially frozen foods frozen safely? And you can’t actually freeze thing yourself because you need minus 30. If you put leftovers or whatever in the freezer, you will get about 200 bacteria being cultivated in it.”
So I was hoping you might be able to get some answers from other mother-experts out there on safe fridge/freezer practices. Thank you!

  • I know with take away l buy in the afternoon to have later at night l let it completely cool down, some times it takes one or two hours.

  • Wow, your mum is super organised to know all that! I’ve never known most of that and survived just fine. So maybe a little over the top info there

  • I have always bulk bought veggies and frozen extra, as well as freezing cooked meals. We’ve not had any issues with illness. I have recently learnt that the fridge door is the warmest part of the fridge, so don’t store your milk there

  • We don’t touch this part for about 20 years as it has always been about midway on the round knob …

  • Great! Some really good comments on this!

  • I freeze my own foods ,vegies mostly ,havent been sick or my family .There should be information on Google might help .

  • Keep foodstuffs in plastic or plastic boxes for long lasting freshness, especially salad items and crisper food stuff

  • I’ve never even considered this… Like some of the other comments I just go with gut instinct & have been fine. We cook and freeze a large portion of our meals

  • The major risk is when food is placed hot into a fridge or freezer, also only ever reheat things once

  • I’ve never had a problem – if the food is fully frozen and then full heated the extreme temperatures should kill bacteria

  • As long as the food is frozen solid it will inhibit the growth of bacteria. Just make sure the food is cooked and reheated very well when you want to eat it.

  • there are some good comments here

  • most fridges does the job for u.. just switch to the lowest temperature

  • Some good advice there below.

  • Sounds just like a scare tactics email to be honest…
