  • $5 I would say is good. If they do simple home jobs too

  • My 4 y/o doesnt get an allowance.
I would rather reward a week or months worth of good behaviour with a fun activity.
    Putt Putt, Bowling, different park.

    Everyoneis different…

  • Looking at all the responses it seems $5 is reasonable. I personally thought it was too much and would give $2 or $3 dollars.

  • I give our 5yo boy $5 a week, he looses dollars if he is naughty. when he is 6 he will get $6 ect

  • I think $5 is spot on. Im pretty sure thats how much we used to get when we were younger, it was only $5 a fortnight though. I think $5 is still fine.

  • I think it depends on what jobs your child does!? You are trying to teach your child the value of money and tat they have to work and finish the work to receive payment. I would do $5 a fortnight if it was me. But I guess it’s just a personal preference?!

  • My 5 year old son gets $5 a week to put into school banking.

  • I think $5 is a good amount. As a kid we always got the same as our age – 5 years $5, 6 years $6 etc. although there was an appropriate amount of jobs to go with it and a few extra added when the amount went up.

  • Thank you for all these suggestions, I’m keeping them all in mind. I might be a bit slack being a single mum so I’ve gotta get tougher on the discipline and chores starting today!

  • I think its a good start to learning about money . Maybe get your child to clean up is bedroom or toys , help you make his school lunch etc. something simple and easy to do .

  • A list of chores with a value against them is a good idea. The kids get paid for the completed chores.

  • Thank you for your advice everyone!

  • I think its great for a kid to have some pocket money my 8 and 6 year old have been spending theirs on footy cards this year.. I put it to them if there is something they want they have to use their pocket money to buy it..

  • I think $5 would be suitable for a 5 year old!

  • Its a personal choice. I don’t give my son pocket money but if he has been well behaved or helped out around the house then I get him a special treat.
