Hello!

We’ve got 2 embryos in the freezer at our IVF clinic. We’re not sure if we can do another round of IVF. We have one beautiful baby after a difficult pregnancy and premature birth at 27 weeks. What can we do with the other embryos if we don’t use them?

  • If they’ve been genetically tested you could donate them

  • You can donate them to experiments, or you can let them succumb (die). I’m not sure you can legally donate them to another family in Australia, and would you really like the idea of your child being out there, unknown to you?

  • That’s a really difficult question to answer. If you don’t use them, you only have 2 options….donate them or destroy them. Either would be heartbreaking. Only you can decide which path to take, totally up to you and hubby

  • yes they will be donated or disposed of as medical waste. Sorry to be so harsh but that is the truth

  • Talk to your doctor/clinic about what your options are… like others have said though I would not be making any hard and fast decisions… you may wish to use them yourself. No pregnancy is ever the same so don’t let that put you off.

  • Donate them to others but honestly all pregnancies are not the same your next pregnancy could be amazing.mxxx

  • If paying to continue storing them is something that you can afford, I’d keep doing that, until such time as you feel comfortable making a decision about what to do. Please don’t make a decision in haste, that you may later regret. And while you will probably hear many different opinions from other people, you have to do what is right for you. I wish you well.

  • We have 5 in storage and our hope is to try again for another set of twins and donate our remaining embryos to other couples if we’re able to….

  • We’ve been told if we don’t use them ourselves, we can donate them other couples, destroy them or offer them to medical science. We just keep paying our 6 monthly fees because we can’t make a decision on what to do with them.

  • You can donate them to someone or to be used for research or destroyed. I couldn’t let them be used as i would always wonder if there is a child/sibling out there so i would choose to use them or destroy them. Big decision x

  • I would be interested to know what else you can do with them, I’m not sure though. I have never thought of this.
I might ask my parents if they had any unused embryo’s.
They did IVF 20+ years ago so it would probably be different. I’m adopted, unfortunately they couldn’t conceive.

  • Honestly, I have no idea what options are open to you, didn’t your Doctor provide you with options? Just wondering as I would also be interested in hearing what happens in your situation.
