Hello!

Hi. I have two lovely daughters (11 and 8) and I would like to get a small/medium sized dog for them. We have a fairly large garden so there is plenty of room. What breeds would other mums suggest? I had a Maltese X growing up that had the best temperament and I would like a similar experience for my girls. Thanks

  • Yes, I have a Maltese x ShihTsu. She’s lovely. Beautiful temperament, not destructive and they adapt to most surroundings. I never liked small dogs until we got her, now I’m planning on getting a second one

  • I would stick with the type of dog you’re used to. We had a labrador and we was wonderful, especially as he got older as he tended to be very energetic when he was young.

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Beagle, Pomeranian, Shitzhu, Labs, maybe even another Maltese? Such beautiful temperaments on these doggies!
if you have an RSPCA near by I’d strongly recommend checking it out! They can even match you with a pup based on your home and lifestyle :)

  • Beagles are a great breed, although they can be a little too frisky when young.

  • We have a Maltese ShihTsu. I thoroughly recommend them. Their very friendly, loving little dogs. Quite happy to sit on your lap and watch TV but also happy running around playing. So easy to please, small and generally quiet, don’t eat much, don’t need heaps of room….

  • I have a labradoodle and a king charges cavalier, both are great with kids and take minimal walking and maintenance with a busy lifestyle, there happy to play inside or out. Labradoodle also doesn’t malt so that’s a huge bonus

  • Maybe go along to the RSPCA and they can dog match for you!

  • We’ve got a Labrador Retriever. So sweet and delicate with children. A great companion!

  • My cousin got her kids a labradoodle, he is the sweetest gentlest dog, he doesn’t shed fur, smart. They can be expensive though.

  • King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.
They are so placid – they have an absolutely gorgeous nature.
We got ours when I was about 10 and my sister was 6. He recently passed :(
But he was always so gentle. We used to dress him up in clothes & put bows in his ears & everything.
    I think they’re a beautiful breed.

  • we recently got a rescue dog (puppy actually) and my two year old and the now six month old puppy are best mates. ours is a terrier cross blue heeler (and maybe something else) and they are fine. but I would definitely recommend getting a rescue dog from rspca or a local rescue group.

  • We have a jack russell and a pomeranian :) they love our 2.5 year old!

  • We have a labradoodle and she is the most reliable dog we have ever had. Fantastic with kids and when we bought her we were told if you have an active life she will fit in and if you are a bit laid back and quieter she will fit in. The only problem we have ever had she doesn’t really like being in the car. Also labradoodles are good for people with allergies and they do not shed hair. Good luck.

  • Let the dog p

  • I have a jack Russell x fox terrier, she is full of beans, loves to play with all the children in the street!they are energetic, and loving, intelligent too,so I am recommending you get yourself and girls a jack Russell pup.good luck, all the best.
