Disadvantages of Using Baby Walkers
Babies using walkers may actually reach the walking or crawling milestones later than others who don’t.
Your baby should follow the roll-sit up-crawl-walk routine for which it is important for him to stay on the floor.
They form a potential danger and are unsafe, it’s easy to gather to much speed and for your little one to trip and fall over and injure her-/himself
I wouldn’t use any walker – I was told when fostering that they were banned for foster kids as research shows they are bad – they get muscles working before they are meant to and can cause things to develop with issues. Wait until naturally walking / weight bearing. Don’t add extra tension by requring them to pull the weight of a walker
Your baby should learn to crawl first toexcercise and strengthen back muscles. They are not recommended my medical professionals including physiotherapists for that reason. Crawling also strengthens arm and leg muscles as they use them to move along.
I was gifted a racing car walker from Bigw my child loves it and it’s really helped him strengthen his leg muscles in preparation for crawling and walking.
we had one for my oldest child and we realised it was a waste of time and gave it away… We purchased instead a play centre that they could sit in and swirl around in and play with different toys… There was no worry about the kids toppling out of it… But is a matter of personal opinion… Just get one that is sturdy
As others have said, using walkers isn’t recommended anymore but I’ve used one with 2 of my 3 (not the eldest as she was born with hip dysplasia so was in a cast from 6 wks to 11 months) but so long as babies are supervised at all times, and only use them for 5-10 mins max at a time I can’t see the harm – and I’m overly aware of harm with hip issues! My other 2 loved the independence and the novelty of being upright and moving about the place.
Just to add to the comments from the Mums below, our MCHN said they’re not recommended also, but if you choose to use one, use it for no more than 20 minutes per day. That can be broken up into 5 or 10 minute intervals, but no more than 20 minutes total.
There are so many to choose from, good luck with it all. I would look at Australian made with Aussie safety standards. And the tried and trusted brands that have been around a while. At least you’ll know it’s safe and you’re helping Aussie makers
