Hello!

My daughter is having her first baby soon and I can’t decide what I want my first grandchild to call me. I’m not that keen on gran or granny so I was thinking of a different name, but not sure what. Any ideas?

  • I sadly dont have grandchildren and I really dont know that I ever will.
Sadly my one and only grandchild didnt make it into this world. I would dearly love to be called Grandma or even Granny….I really dont care. Its a honour and I so badly wish that I had a little draling to call me Granny

  • Sweety????

  • Sweety????

  • I like nanna. It’s so sweet.

  • I was the same. I wanted something different from nan, nanny, gran, granny etc. Couldn’t find anything we al liked, so I’m nan. Maybe he’ll think of something original when he’s older

  • I would have maybe suggested Nanna.

  • I’m not a grandparent but my kids call my parents Nanny and Poppy (getting shortened to Nan and Pop as they are getting older. My husbands parents are Granny and Grandad.

  • I’m not a grandparent yet, but I call my grandfather Tata and my grandmother Abuelita. They are little pet names that I would want my future grandkids to call me too. I’ve also heard other grandparent nicknames of floppy and bumpy.

  • No preference yet for great grandchildren.
I remember my sister and I weren’t the eldest grandchildren on either side of the family. one was already called Grandma and the other one Nana.
If you are a different nationality to the grandchildren you could suggest being called by that variation. I know of one Grandparent who demanded it, definitely not just suggested. Neither of the baby’s parents were happy about it. The older kids hate it and don’t like him much either.

  • Is there a play on words you could do with your first name?

My father in law is Boppy (combo of Bob and poppy)
My dad is Papa Jase (he didn’t want a traditional name and we all call him Jase)

  • My son uses “abuela” which is Spanish for grandmother. My nieces use “nana.” I called my grandmother “grammy.”

  • I’ll probably be Grandma as that’s what I called my dad’s mum and my kids call my mum that. Nan seems really popular these days and I’ve also heard lots of kids call their grandparents G’ma which I think is cute.

  • Would love to know what name you decide on for your exciting new role as a grandparent.

  • Granny

  • I actually like the sound of grandmother and grandma. :)
Good luck with finding a name that you like hearing and congratulations on becoming a grandparent (soon).
